Chapter 5 - The Architect of Shadows

The underground garage beneath the Vale estate was vast, cold, and smelled of gasoline and dry concrete. Illuminated only by the red emergency strips along the floor, it housed a fleet of black vehicles, centered around a massive, six-wheeled armored personnel carrier built like a civilian tank.

Dominic set Clara down beside the heavy steel door of the armored transport. His hands were covered in soot and blood, his black turtleneck torn at the shoulder.

Lucian came sprinting down the stairs, followed by four surviving syndicate soldiers, their weapons lowered, their faces dark with exhaustion.

"We held the upper floor long enough for the team to purge the main servers," Lucian panted, wiping sweat from his eyes. "The mansion is compromised, Boss. Vance’s contractors have surrounded the entire forest perimeter. We can't break out by road."

"We aren't breaking out by road," Dominic said, opening the rear door of the armored carrier and lifting Clara inside. Bear clambered up after her, collapsing onto the metal floor with a heavy sigh. "We’re taking the old utility tunnel beneath the north ridge. It leads directly to the abandoned rail yards three miles away."

"And then what?" Lucian asked, climbing into the driver's seat and hitting the ignition switch. The massive diesel engine roared to life with a deep, vibrating rumble that shook the garage walls. "Vance has the entire state law enforcement network looking for us. By sunrise, every airport, train station, and highway will be blocked."

Dominic climbed into the front passenger seat, pulling a secure satellite terminal onto his lap. He inserted the micro-SD card from Clara’s locket into the drive.

"Silas Vance thinks he controls this city because he bought the judges and the police chief," Dominic said, his dark eyes reflecting the green light of the terminal screen. "He forgot who built the infrastructure those judges walk on."

"What are you going to do, Boss?"

"I’m not going to broadcast this ledger to the news stations," Dominic said, his fingers flying across the military-grade keyboard. "News can be censored. State governors can issue gag orders. I am going to broadcast this file directly to the servers of the Department of Justice, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and every major international media outlet simultaneously using our encrypted syndicate relay stations."

"That will trigger an immediate federal intervention," Lucian realized, a dark grin spreading across his face. "The local police won't be able to cover for Vance. The feds will have no choice but to arrest him."

"Yes," Dominic said coldly. "But before the federal agents arrive at Senator Vance’s penthouse... I am going to meet him myself."

From the back seat, Clara leaned forward between the heavy leather seats. "Are you going to leave us?" she asked softly.

Dominic turned his head. In the dim red light of the dashboard, his harsh, scarred face looked softer than it ever had.

"I have to finish what your father started, Clara," Dominic said gently. "Lucian will take you and Bear to a safe house across the state line. You will be safe there."

Clara shook her head, tears filling her eyes. "No! You promised! You said you wouldn't leave me!"

Dominic reached back, taking her tiny hand in his large, calloused palm. "I am not leaving you, Clara. I am clearing the road so you never have to sleep on a pile of trash again. So you never have to run from bad men."

He pulled a gold signet ring from his pinky finger—the ring of the Vale Syndicate head—and placed it into her small palm, closing her fingers over it.

"Hold onto this for me," Dominic whispered. "If I am not back by sunrise, give this ring to Lucian. He will make sure you are taken care of for the rest of your life."

Clara looked down at the heavy gold ring, then up at his face. "You have to come back," she insisted, her voice surprisingly firm. "Bear will be waiting for you."

Dominic looked at the thin brown dog, who raised his head and gave a single, quiet whimper of understanding.

May you like

"I will come back," Dominic promised.

The armored carrier accelerated, smashing through the heavy wooden gates of the utility tunnel, plunging into the pitch-black darkness beneath the earth, hurtling toward the final confrontation.
