Chapter 6 - The Shadows of the Past

The transition to their new life was not without friction.
While the city of Boston sat under the quiet, absolute control of the returned Valente king, the emotional wounds within the stone mansion ran deep. Grace spent her days rearranging the house, her movements frantic, as if she were waiting for the illusion to shatter. She would frequently wake up in the middle of the night, rushing to Noah’s room just to ensure the boy hadn't been snatched away by the ghosts of their past.
Roman stood by the doorway of Noah’s bedroom at 3:00 AM on a Tuesday, watching Grace tuck the blankets around their sleeping son for the third time that night.
"He's safe, Grace," Roman said softly, stepping into the room. He wore a simple dark robe, his expression full of a quiet, aching sorrow for the damage his world had caused her. "The perimeter is locked down. Gabriel is at the front gate. No one can reach him."
Grace stood up, her shoulders rigid as she walked out into the long, dimly lit hallway. "It’s not the perimeter I'm worried about, Roman. It’s the air. This house... it smells like the family. It smells like the contracts, the blood, the meetings in the study."
She turned to face him, her eyes dark with exhaustion. "For five years, I lived in fear, but I also lived in a world where no one was killed in my name. Noah went to a public daycare. He played with children whose fathers were mechanics and teachers. Now... he has four armed men walking him to the playground."
Roman took a slow step toward her, his large hands reaching out, but he stopped himself, letting them drop to his sides. "I built this empire to protect you, Grace. But if the empire is what terrifies you, tell me what to do. I will tear it down piece by piece if it means you can sleep through the night."

Grace looked at him, her gaze scanning the deep scars on his face and jaw. She realized that the man before her wasn't the ruthless mafia boss the city feared; he was a husband who had spent five years in hell just to find his way back to her.
"I don't want you to tear it down, Roman," she whispered, stepping into his arms and burying her face in his shoulder. "I just want you to change it. Make it a shield, not a weapon."
