Chapter 6 - The Return of the King

The front doors of the cabin swung open with a heavy thud.
Declan stepped across the threshold, collapsing against the wooden doorframe, his breathing ragged and bloody. His dark coat was shredded, soaked in seawater and mud, and his face was covered in dark bruises and dried blood.
“Declan!” Emma screamed, running down the wooden stairs.
She reached him just as his knees gave out. She caught him around the chest, supporting his heavy frame with all her strength, lowering him gently onto the leather sofa near the fireplace.
Marcus rushed down the stairs behind her, carrying a medical kit. “Boss! Good God, you’re alive!”
Declan let out a harsh, coughing laugh that ended in a groan of pain. He looked up at Emma, his dark eyes burning with an intense, fierce light despite his injuries.
“I told you… I would come for my girls,” Declan rasped, his voice sounding like broken glass.
Emma dropped to her knees beside the sofa, her hands trembling as she unbuttoned his soaked coat to inspect his wounds. A deep graze from a bullet cut across his left ribcage, and his shoulder was heavily bruised, but his pulse was strong and steady.
“You’re insane,” Emma sobbed, tears finally pouring down her face as she pressed a sterile bandage against his bleeding side. “They reported you dead! They burned the entire mansion!”
“I burned the mansion,” Declan corrected softly, leaning his head back against the leather cushion. “I set the fire in the west wing to blind Julian’s mercenaries while I cleared the private vault. I took the underwater escape tunnel beneath the boat dock and swam two miles up the coast to my private boat.”
Marcus quickly began cleaning the bullet graze on Declan’s side. “Boss, Julian called an emergency summit at the Drake Hotel for Friday night. He’s taking the throne.”
Declan reached out, grabbing the heavy steel briefcase he had carried onto the porch, setting it on the coffee table between them. He hit the electronic keypad, entering a six-digit code.
The briefcase popped open with a heavy hiss of released pressure.
Inside were six thick black hard drives, stacks of encrypted satellite documents, and a series of recorded audio files labeled with Meredith and Julian’s names.
“Julian thinks he bought the Syndicate board,” Declan said, his voice dropping into a terrifyingly cold register. “He doesn't know that for three years, I’ve been building a complete federal asset file on every illegal operation he and Meredith ran behind my back. Human trafficking, extortion, illegal arms sales—everything I refused to allow inside the Shaw empire.”
Emma looked at the hard drives, then at Declan. “You’re going to give these to the authorities?”
“I’m going to give them to the Syndicate board on Friday night,” Declan said, his eyes flashing like black steel. “In our world, breaking the law gets you arrested. But betraying the family and torturing children gets you executed by your own people.”
Declan leaned forward, reaching out to take Emma’s face in his large, warm hands. His thumbs gently wiped the tears from her cheeks.
“Where are my daughters?” he asked softly.
“Upstairs,” Emma whispered, leaning into his touch. “They’re asleep. They haven't cried once since we left Chicago.”
Declan closed his eyes for a long moment, a deep, ragged breath escaping his chest as tears cut clean lines through the dirt on his face.
“Thank you, Emma,” Declan murmured, his forehead resting lightly against hers. “You brought my children back to me from the dark.”
At that moment, small footsteps sounded at the top of the stairs.
Grace and June stood at the railing in their white pajamas, rubbing their eyes. They looked down at the living room, freezing as they saw their father sitting on the sofa.
“Daddy?” June whispered softly.
Declan stood up, ignoring the agonizing pain in his ribs, opening his arms wide.
“Come here, my sweet girls,” Declan choked out.
The twins shrieked in pure, unadulterated joy, sprinting down the wooden stairs as fast as their little legs could carry them, throwing themselves into their father’s arms. Declan pulled them tight against his chest, burying his face in their soft hair, weeping silently as he held his whole world in his arms.

Emma stood near the fireplace, watching them with a radiant, tearful smile.
For the first time in years, the Shaw family was whole. And the storm that had haunted their lives was finally about to be put to rest.
