Chapter 7 - The Gathering at the Drake

Friday night arrived in Chicago under a blanket of heavy, freezing rain.
The grand ballroom of the historic Drake Hotel was filled with two hundred of the most powerful and dangerous individuals in the Midwest. Crime bosses, corrupt politicians, union leaders, and high-ranking Syndicate captains sat at long velvet-covered tables, sipping expensive scotch while heavily armed guards stood at every exit.
At the head of the main table sat Julian Vance, wearing a three-piece Italian suit, a gold signet ring on his finger. Beside him sat Meredith Shaw, wearing an extravagant diamond necklace, her face smug and radiant with triumph.
Julian tapped his glass with a silver knife, bringing the noisy room to a absolute hush.
“Ladies and gentlemen of the Syndicate,” Julian announced, standing up, his voice echoing through the grand hall. “We gather tonight under tragic circumstances. My dear brother-in-law, Declan Shaw, suffered a fatal mental breakdown four days ago. In his insanity, he destroyed his own estate and abandoned his duties to this family.”
A quiet murmur ran through the crowd of crime bosses.
Meredith wiped a fake tear from her eye with a lace handkerchief. “It breaks my heart to say it, but Declan was no longer fit to lead. He was weak. He put his personal grief above the prosperity of this family.”
Julian raised his champagne glass high. “Therefore, as senior captain and executor of the Shaw estate, I hereby claim the chairmanship of the Shaw Syndicate. Is there anyone among the board who stands against this motion?”
The room was completely silent. None of the regional bosses dared to challenge Julian, knowing he had hired fifty mercenaries currently patrolling the hotel corridors.
“Then let it be resolved—” Julian began.
BOOM!
The heavy double doors at the back of the grand ballroom didn't just open—they were blown clean off their brass hinges by an explosive breaching charge, flying inward and crashing onto the marble floor.
A thick cloud of white smoke poured into the ballroom.
Panic erupted across the room as guards drew their weapons, shouting in confusion.
“STAY IN YOUR SEATS!” a loud, commanding voice roared through the smoke.
Marcus and twenty elite, heavy-armored Shaw loyalists poured through the breached doors, taking up tactical positions along the perimeter of the room, their assault rifles aiming directly at Julian’s mercenaries.
Through the clearing white smoke walked Declan Shaw.
He wore a pristine black tuxedo, his dark hair slicked back, a silver skull-headed cane resting in his right hand—not because he needed it, but because it carried the royal seal of the Shaw founding family.
Beside him walked Emma Reed, looking breathtakingly gorgeous in a tailored burgundy evening gown, holding a leather folder containing the master encryption keys to the hard drives.
The entire ballroom gasped in collective shock.
Meredith’s champagne glass slipped from her hand, shattering against the parquet floor. Her face went as white as a bedsheet.
“Declan…” Meredith whispered, her voice cracking in pure terror.
Julian stumbled back against his chair, his eyes bulging out of his head. “No… no! You’re dead! I saw the fire!”
May you like
Declan walked slowly down the center aisle of the ballroom, his cane clicking rhythmically against the marble floor. His dark eyes were fixed on Julian and Meredith with a terrifying, absolute authority that made every man in the room hold his breath.
“You should have checked the ashes, Julian,” Declan said, his voice smooth, deep, and carrying the icy weight of absolute death. “A king does not die in a fire started by rats.”
