Chapter 10 - The Sanctuary of Light

One year later.
The morning sun warmed the green hills of the Baltimore countryside. Where an abandoned industrial farm had once stood, a stunning, state-of-the-art facility now thrived. A large wooden sign at the entrance read: THE CAESAR & RUBY HART SANCTUARY FOR ANIMAL REHABILITATION.
Dozens of dogs—rescued from shelters, abuse cases, and the street—ran freely through fenced, lush green pastures. A team of professional vets and handlers worked in modern, clean clinics equipped with the best medical technology money could buy.
On the front porch of the main house, Ruby sat in a comfortable rocking chair. She was visibly glowing, wearing a soft floral dress, her hand resting gently on her swollen stomach. She was seven months pregnant.
Beside her, lying across her feet as he had done on the very first night they met, was Caesar. The giant cane corso was older now, a few gray hairs touching his dark muzzle, but his eyes were bright, calm, and completely at peace.
The sound of a heavy engine echoed up the driveway. A sleek black pickup truck pulled up, and Luca stepped out. He was dressed casually in jeans and a dark shirt, his hair windswept, looking younger, healthier, and completely free of the dark shadow that had once defined him.
He walked up the porch steps, carrying a box of hot, fresh pastries from the city's best bakery.
"How is the boss lady feeling today?" Luca asked, leaning down to plant a long, warm kiss on Ruby’s lips before dropping a soft kiss onto her pregnant belly.
"The baby is kicking," Ruby smiled, taking his hand and pressing it against her side. "I think he's going to be as loud and stubborn as his father."
"Good," Luca grinned, sitting on the porch railing beside her, his hand remaining on her belly. "We need more stubbornness in this family."
He looked out over the rolling green hills, watching the rescue dogs play in the sun. It was a life he had never dreamed possible—a life built not on fear, blood, or control, but on grace, healing, and love.
Caesar opened one amber eye, looked at Luca, then at Ruby, and let out a long, contented sigh, closing his eyes to nap under the warm afternoon sun.
"You know," Luca said softly, turning to look at his wife, his dark eyes filled with endless warmth, "the night Caesar ran into your clinic, I thought I was tracking a dog."

Ruby smiled, placing her hand over his. "And what did you find?"
Luca leaned down, pressing his forehead gently against hers. "My home."
