Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

The battle for the Marchetti estate raged for forty-five minutes, but the outcome was never truly in doubt. Once Luca knew Ruby was safe in the depths of the basement, he unleashed a merciless counter-attack that wiped out the Valenti assault team to the last man.

When the sun began to rise over the Chesapeake Bay, the estate was quiet once more. Fire trucks and federal vehicles lined the long driveway, but this time, they were not there to arrest Luca. They were there to process the total destruction of the Valenti crime family.

Luca stood in the ruined grand foyer, his tactical vest covered in soot and blood, his right arm wrapped in a tight bandage. He looked exhausted, older than his thirty-four years, staring at the ruins of his father's house.

The heavy cellar door clicked open.

Ruby stepped out into the sunlight pouring through the shattered skylights. Caesar walked beside her, his coat stained with dark wine and dirt, but his head held high.

Luca turned. When he saw her—unharmed, strong, walking toward him with unwavering focus—the cold, terrifying armor he had worn his entire life finally cracked completely.

He dropped his weapon onto the floor and walked toward her.

They met in the center of the ruined foyer. Luca pulled her into his arms, burying his face into the crook of her neck, inhaling her scent—rain, vanilla, and the copper tang of blood. He squeezed her so tightly she could barely breathe, but she didn't care. She wrapped her arms around his waist, holding him up as much as he was holding her.

"I have Matteo," Ruby whispered into his ear, a tiny, triumphant smile touching her lips. "He's tied to a pillar in the wine cellar with duct tape."

Luca pulled back, staring at her in sheer disbelief before throwing his head back and laughing—a long, joyous, triumphant sound that echoed through the broken house.

"You knocked out Matteo Valenti?" Luca asked, shaking his head in wonder.

"With a six-thousand-dollar bottle of wine," she replied smoothly. "You're deducting it from my sanctuary budget."

"I'll buy you ten more bottles," Luca said, his eyes filled with a fierce, profound devotion. He cupped her face in his hands, looking down into her eyes. "It's over, Ruby. Valenti is finished. The docks are secure. The city is clean."

"And what about you?" she asked softly. "What happens to the Don now?"

Luca looked around at the shattered remnants of his fortress. "The Don is retiring," he said quietly. "I'm handing the shipping operations over to Marco. Legitimate, transparent management. I'm done living in the dark."

Caesar nudged his heavy head between them, forcing them to include him in the embrace. Luca looked down at his dog, then up at the woman who had transformed his world.

"I think," Luca said, his voice thick with emotion, "I have a sanctuary to build."
