Chapter 3 - The Slow Collapse

The human body can survive without a hand or a foot. But it cannot survive without a heart.

Within forty-eight hours of Ivy pulling back her active oversight, the Morelli estate began to rot from the inside out—not through grand disasters, but through a thousand invisible, lethal details.

Ivy performed her exact contractual duties. She ironed the shirts. She dusted the foyer. She cleaned the dishes.

But she stopped protecting them from themselves.

On Wednesday morning, a high-ranking political diplomat from Washington arrived at the estate for a secret breakfast with Dante. Vanessa, attempting to play the perfect hostess, ordered the kitchen staff to serve a lavish spread of shellfish and imported pastries.

Two years ago, Ivy would have quietly intervened, remembering that the diplomat’s wife had a severe, airborne shellfish allergy that could cause anaphylactic shock in seconds.

Ivy said nothing. She simply folded the napkins in the corner.

Ten minutes into the breakfast, the diplomat’s wife began turning blue. The breakfast dissolved into absolute chaos—sirens blaring, bodyguards panicking, and the diplomat storming off the property screaming that the Morelli alliance was officially dead.

On Thursday afternoon, a rival syndicate boss sent a trojan gift—a crate of vintage 1945 scotch delivered directly to the front gate.

Normally, Ivy cross-referenced every delivery against a master ledger of approved vendors, flagging untracked packages for bomb and poison sweeps.

Ivy accepted the delivery, logged it strictly as “Unchecked Package - Gate 2,” and left it on the security table.

When Dante’s chief of security, Marco, opened it without taking proper precautions, a dye-pack tracking chemical exploded across the security room, corrupting three weeks of encrypted surveillance hard drives and exposing the estate’s outer guard rotations to outside monitoring.

Vanessa was hysterical.

"She’s doing this on purpose!" Vanessa shrieked in the master living room, throwing an crystal vase against the fireplace. "The maid is sabotaging us! Dante, fire her! Throw her out on the street!"

Dante sat in his heavy leather armchair, a glass of neat bourbon in his hand. His suit jacket was off, his tie undone. He looked exhausted, his gray eyes shadowed with deep frustration.

He looked up at Vanessa. "Did Ivy touch the scotch crate?"

"Well... no, but—"

"Did Ivy order the shellfish?"

"I ordered the shellfish!" Vanessa snapped, her face flushed with anger. "How was I supposed to know the woman was allergic? A good house manager should have warned me!"

"A good house manager used to handle it," Dante said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, dark register. "Because a good house manager was treated with respect in this house. But you treated her like trash, Vanessa. You stripped away her dignity. And now you expect her to save you from your own stupidity?"

Vanessa gasped, stepping back. "Are you taking her side? Over mine? I am your fiancée, Dante! My father controls the ports that keep your shipments moving!"

"Your father’s ports are useless if my estate is compromised from the inside," Dante growled, standing up.

Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the living room swung open.

Dante’s younger brother, Leo Morelli—the head of the family’s intelligence network—burst into the room. He looked pale, holding a thick red folder.

"Dante," Leo said urgently, ignoring Vanessa completely. "We have a massive problem."

Dante straightened up. "What is it?"

"The Sterling Port Authority just flagged four of our cargo ships in the harbor," Leo said, his voice laced with panic. "Federal agents are raiding Dock 4 right now. Someone leaked our customs manifest logs."

Vanessa’s eyes widened. "What? That’s impossible! My father would never—"

"Your father didn't leak it, Vanessa," Leo spat, turning a cold, furious glare toward her. "Your father’s private secretary leaked it. The same secretary you hired two weeks ago without running a background check through Ivy!"

The room went dead silent.

Vanessa swallowed hard, her confidence crumbling into sheer terror. "I... I just wanted my own person at the port..."

Dante looked at Vanessa. The cold, lethal killer that lived beneath his expensive suits slowly emerged.

"You brought a federal informant into my supply chain," Dante whispered.

"Dante, please! It was an accident!" Vanessa sobbed, reaching for him.

Dante didn't look at her. He turned to Leo. "Where is Ivy?"

Leo blinked, confused by the question. "Ivy? She’s in the staff wing, packing her bags. Her two weeks are up today."

Dante didn't wait another second. He brushed past his brother, ignoring Vanessa’s hysterical crying, and stormed toward the servant's quarters at the back of the mansion.
