Chapter 8 - The Gala of Retribution

That evening, the Morelli estate was bathed in spectacular lights.
Hundreds of luxury vehicles lined the long, winding driveway, dropping off state governors, shipping magnates, international diplomats, and federal judges. The grand hall, once the site of Ivy’s humiliation, was now filled with the rich sounds of a live string quartet, sparkling champagne towers, and laughter.
In the center of the room stood Dante Morelli, holding a glass of scotch, talking with the newly appointed Federal Prosecutor, Marcus Vance.
"Judge Sterling’s trial begins next month, Dante," Prosecutor Vance said in a low voice. "The evidence your legal team provided regarding his offshore bribery accounts was ironclad. He’s facing twenty years."
"He earned every day of it," Dante replied coldly, taking a sip of his drink.
"And his daughter?"
"Vanessa is currently working as a junior clerk in a fashion house in Paris," Dante said with zero sympathy. "Her trust fund was seized by the federal courts. She lives in a two-room attic apartment and takes the subway."
Before Vance could respond, the room fell into a quiet, respectful hush.
At the top of the grand staircase stood Ivy Bennett.
She wore an emerald-green silk gown that flowed over her curves like liquid velvet, highlighting her gorgeous figure with regal beauty. Her short chestnut hair was styled in elegant, shimmering curls, and around her neck hung a simple, breathtaking diamond necklace—a gift from Dante that had once belonged to his grandmother.
She walked down the stairs with effortless grace, every eye in the room drawn to her quiet, commanding presence.
She wasn't hiding in the shadows. She wasn't carrying a cleaning rag. She was the hostess, the director, and the undisputed queen of the evening.
Dante stepped away from the prosecutor, walking across the marble floor to meet her at the bottom of the stairs. He held out his arm, and Ivy slid her hand comfortably into the crook of his elbow.
"You look breathtaking," Dante whispered in her ear, his voice tight with deep emotion.
"You don't look too bad yourself, Mr. Morelli," Ivy teased softly.
Senator Blake, one of the most powerful political figures in the region, stepped forward with a warm smile, holding out his glass toward Ivy.
"Dr. Bennett!" Senator Blake announced loudly enough for the surrounding elite to hear. "I was just telling Dante that the logistics report your firm submitted for the port expansion was the most brilliant piece of administrative planning I’ve seen in twenty years. You saved the state four million dollars in environmental compliance costs!"
"Thank you, Senator," Ivy replied with complete composure and charm. "Proper organization always saves money in the end."
"If you ever tire of running Morelli’s estate, my office would hire you tomorrow as Chief of Operations!" Blake laughed warmly.
Dante’s arm tightened around Ivy’s waist, a dark, protective possessiveness flashing in his eyes. "Don't get any ideas, Senator. She’s completely irreplaceable here."
As the evening progressed, Ivy moved through the high-society crowd with absolute confidence. She spoke knowledgeably about maritime law, economic trade, and community development. The very people who had once treated her as invisible were now lining up to speak with her, eager to secure her favor and her firm's services.
At ten o'clock, Dante led Ivy away from the crowd, taking her out through the French doors onto the quiet, moonlit terrace overlooking the dark Atlantic Ocean.
The ocean breeze blew softly, carrying the sweet scent of night-blooming jasmine from the greenhouse.
Ivy leaned against the stone balustrade, looking out at the glittering water. "It’s a beautiful night."
Dante stepped up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist, pulling her back against his chest. He buried his face in the soft crook of her neck, inhaling the sweet scent of lavender and roses that had always been her signature.
"Four months ago," Dante murmured against her skin, "I stood in this spot believing that power was something you took with force."
Ivy turned around in his arms, resting her hands against his broad chest, looking up into his grey eyes. "And what do you believe now?"
Dante reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, dark velvet box.
Ivy’s breath hitched.
He didn't drop to one knee with grand, dramatic fanfare. He simply held the box between them, opening the lid to reveal a flawless, radiant-cut emerald ring surrounded by delicate diamonds—matching the green of her dress and the color of life returning to his world.
"Now I know that true power is protecting the people you love," Dante said, his deep voice trembling with raw, unvarnished truth. "True power is standing beside a woman who built her own destiny out of ashes. Ivy... I don't want an empire without you. I don't want this house, these ships, or this money unless you are holding my hand."
He looked into her brown eyes, his heart exposed completely for the first time in his life.
"Will you marry me, Ivy? Will you be my wife, my partner, and my equal?"
Ivy looked down at the ring, then up at the man who had torn down his own world just to earn her respect. She thought of her grandmother, of her journey from the basement laundry rooms to the top of the stairs, and of the incredible, unbreakable love that had bloomed between them.
She wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling him down to her.

"Yes, Dante," Ivy whispered against his lips. "Yes."
Dante let out a ragged, joyful laugh, sliding the ring onto her finger before lifting her off her feet, pulling her into a passionate, deep kiss under the silver light of the moon.
