Chapter 7 - The Promise on the Lake

Two months later, in mid-July.
The shores of Lake Michigan were bathed in the fiery red and gold hues of a summer sunset.
A small, private gazebo stood on the edge of the Moretti property, overlooking the clear blue water that stretched to the horizon. The gazebo was draped in white silk and decorated with hundreds of bright yellow sunflowers from the garden.
Standing near the water were forty people—the entire Moretti staff, Marcus Hale, Charles Bennett, Cook Rosa Alvarez, and a select group of trusted friends.
Under the wooden arches of the gazebo, a judge stood with a black robe, holding a small leather book.
Standing across from him was Adrian Moretti, wearing a tailored navy-blue tuxedo. He looked healthier, younger, and happier than anyone had seen him in a decade.
Walking down the grass aisle toward him was Sofia.
She wore an elegant, simple white silk gown that swept softly over the green grass. She carried a bouquet of sunflowers and white roses, her chestnut hair styled in elegant braids pinned with small pearls.
Walking in front of her was Emma, wearing a tiny white dress, carrying a basket of rose petals, her yellow fleece boots peeking out from beneath her skirt as she skipped happily toward Adrian.
When Sofia reached the gazebo, Adrian took both of her hands into his heavy palms.
The judge cleared his throat, smiling warmly at the couple. "We are gathered here today to unite Adrian Moretti and Sofia Romano in holy matrimony."
When the time came for the exchange of vows, Adrian didn't look at a paper. He looked straight into Sofia’s tear-filled eyes.
"Sofia," Adrian spoke, his deep voice carrying clearly over the gentle sound of the lake waves. "Five months ago, I saw a little girl in a cold tenement building cut a loaf of bread in half to save her mother. I saw a woman who worked until her hands bled to protect her child. That night, my heart broke open. Today, I give you my life, my name, my fortune, and my protection. I promise to cherish you, honor you, and stand as a shield between you and the world for all the days of my life."
Sofia wiped a joyful tear from her cheek, her voice sweet and strong.
"Adrian," she whispered. "You found us when we had nothing left. You gave us a home, you gave my daughter her laughter back, and you showed me that love can heal even the deepest wounds. I am yours, now and forever."
"By the authority vested in me," the judge announced with a wide smile, "I now pronounce you husband and wife. Adrian, you may kiss your bride."
Adrian pulled Sofia into his arms, lifting her slightly off her feet as he kissed her deeply under the white silk of the gazebo.
The crowd erupted into enthusiastic applause. Marcus cheered loudly, while old Cook Rosa wiped tears from her apron.

Emma ran over, wrapping her arms around both of their legs, giggling uncontrollably. "Yay! Mommy and Uncle Adrian are married!"
Adrian laughed—a loud, booming, joyful sound that echoed across the lake—and scooped both Sofia and Emma into his arms, holding his new family tight against his heart.
