Chapter 9 - The School at the Docks

One year later.

The city of Chicago was undergoing a transformation that surprised even the federal authorities.

The Moretti Charitable Foundation, funded by Adrian’s vast logistics and real estate networks, had launched the 'Daniel Romano Memorial Foundation'—an initiative dedicated to building free after-school centers, health clinics, and housing assistance programs for single mothers and low-income families across Cook County.

In Cicero, the old, crumbling five-story apartment building on 5th Avenue had been completely rebuilt into a modern, sunlit community center with a free day-care, a library, and a job training clinic.

On a crisp October morning, the grand opening ceremony was taking place outside the building.

Hundreds of neighborhood residents, mothers, children, and local leaders had gathered on the freshly paved street, decorated with yellow balloons and flower banners.

Standing at the wooden podium was Sofia Moretti, wearing an elegant cream suit, speaking confidently to the crowd.

"Eighteen months ago," Sofia spoke into the microphone, her voice steady and filled with deep emotion, "I sat in a cold room in this very building, wondering how I was going to feed my daughter. I thought the world had forgotten us. But love and kindness have a way of finding us in our darkest hours."

She looked toward the front row, where Adrian stood in his dark suit, holding five-year-old Emma on his shoulders.

"This center is dedicated to my late husband, Daniel, and to every parent who works through the night so their children can dream of a better tomorrow," Sofia concluded to thunderous applause from the crowd.

As the ribbon was cut, children ran into the new playground, their laughter filling the streets of Cicero where terror had once ruled.

Marcus walked up beside Adrian, watching the happy crowd with a rare, genuine smile on his scarred face.

"The Commission in New York called this morning, Boss," Marcus reported quietly. "They want to partner on the new shipping logistics terminal in Detroit. They offered us seventy percent of the revenue."

Adrian didn't take his eyes off his wife and daughter.

"Tell them no," Adrian said smoothly. "Give twenty percent of the profits to the local dockworkers' pension fund, and keep the rest in Chicago. We don't need New York's money."

Marcus chuckled softly. "Understood, Don Moretti."
