Chapter 7 - The Breach

The peace was brutally shattered on a Thursday night. A torrential rainstorm had knocked out the main power lines along the highway, forcing the compound to switch to its backup generators.

At 2:14 AM, a series of muted explosions rocked the southern perimeter wall. Marcone’s men, desperate and pushed to the brink by Gabriel’s relentless corporate warfare, had launched a suicide assault on the fortress.

The alarms blared, a steady, crimson pulsing light illuminating the hallways.

Gabriel was down in the courtyard within seconds, an assault rifle strapped to his chest. "Vincent! Secure the medical wing! Marco, take the east flank!"

The Guard DogInside the guest suite, Elena woke up to the sound of gunfire. She immediately shoved Sofia and her sister into the heavy concrete walk-in closet, locking the reinforced door from the inside.

Instead of hiding with them, she picked up the compact firearm Gabriel had given her days ago. Her hands shook, but her mind was entirely clear. She remembered his words: Point and squeeze.

The window of the guest suite shattered as a hitman in a black balaclava swung inside from a grappling hook. He landed heavily on the carpet, his weapon raised.

Elena didn't scream. She stepped out from the shadow of the armoire, raised the pistol with both hands, and squeezed the trigger three times.

The heavy rounds caught the assassin square in the chest. He stumbled backward, his eyes wide with shock behind the mask, before crashing through the broken window frame and plunging into the darkness below.

Gabriel burst into the room a second later, his weapon hot. He saw the empty window, the shell casings on the floor, and Elena standing there, her chest heaving, the gun still pointed at the opening.

He stepped forward, gently lowering her hands. "You’re safe. The perimeter is clear."

Elena looked at him, her voice a ragged whisper. "They tried to get to the clinic. I heard them on their radios. They wanted the boy."

Gabriel’s eyes turned into liquid midnight. "This ends tonight."
