Chapter 9 - The Gift of Life

Two weeks after the fall of the Marcone family, a specialized medical courier vehicle arrived at the Bedford compound under heavy armed escort. Dr. Aris ran out to meet it, his face filled with a rare, urgent excitement.

"We found a match, Gabriel," Aris reported, holding a temperature-controlled medical container. "A perfect pediatric heart valve donor from a hospital in Boston. The logistics are set up. We can perform the surgery here in our sterile theatre right now."

The surgery lasted seven agonizing hours.

Gabriel sat in the waiting room, his head in his hands. He hadn't slept in thirty-six hours. The empire was secure, his enemies were dead, but none of it mattered if that tiny machine inside his son's chest stopped ticking.

A Shared VigilA soft hand rested on his shoulder. Gabriel looked up to see Elena. She was holding two paper cups of coffee, her face tired but peaceful.

"He’s strong, Gabriel," she said, sitting beside the most feared man in the city. "He has his father’s stubbornness. He won't give up."

Gabriel took the cup, his fingers brushing against hers. "I’ve spent my whole life making people afraid of me, Elena. I thought fear was a shield. I thought if I made the world terrified enough, nothing could touch my family. But it didn't save him. You did. With a broken mop."

Elena looked out the window at the morning sun breaking through the trees. "Fear doesn't protect people, Gabriel. Love does. Responsibility does. You have a chance to change things now. For him."

The operating room doors clicked open. Dr. Aris stepped out, stripping his surgical mask off with a wide, exhausted smile. "The valve is in. His heart is beating perfectly on its own. Daniel is going to make a full recovery."

Gabriel let out a ragged breath, tears finally spilling over his eyelids as he reached out and gripped Elena’s hand—not as a boss, but as a grateful father.
