Chapter 4 - The Harrison Avenue Siege

The lights in the alley behind Harrison Avenue went out at precisely 3:14 AM.
Elena sat up instantly on the mattress, her instincts screaming that the silence had changed. It was no longer the heavy silence of a sleeping neighborhood; it was the synchronized, predatory silence of men moving in stack formation.
"Clara!" Elena hissed, throwing off the blanket and rushing into the small hallway.
Clara emerged from the kitchen, a shotgun gripped in her hands, her face tight. "They cut the main line from the street. They're at the back door. Elena, get to the basement. Now!"
A sudden, concussive blast rocked the front of the building. The heavy reinforced wooden door splintered inward, followed by the blinding flash of a flashbang grenade. Elena was thrown against the wall, her ears ringing violently, her vision turning into a blur of smoke and white light.
Through the haze, she saw dark figures moving through the frame—men with tactical vests and suppressed submachine guns. Lucas Benton, Adrian’s trusted security chief, stepped through the smoke, his shoulder still taped from the ambush, a cruel smile stretching across his face.
"Find the girl!" Lucas ordered his men, his weapon raised. "Kill anyone else in the house."
Clara fired a blast from her shotgun, the spread catching one of the enforcers in the chest and throwing him back into the alley. But before she could pump the weapon for a second shot, Lucas fired two precise rounds into her torso. Clara collapsed onto the linoleum floor, the shotgun clattering away into the darkness.
"Clara!" Elena screamed, her voice tearing from her throat. She tried to reach her friend, but one of Lucas’s men grabbed her by her dark hair, ripping her backward and forcing her onto her knees.
Lucas walked over, his boots splashing in the blood pooling on the kitchen floor. He looked down at Elena with cold, indifferent eyes. "You should have stayed in Rhode Island, Elena. It would have been much cleaner if you had just died in the hurricane."
"Adrian will kill you for this, Lucas," Elena spat, her chin high despite the hand twisting her hair. "He knows every move you make."
"Adrian thinks you're a rat," Lucas laughed, raising his pistol and aligning the sights with her forehead. "By the time he finds your body, the Moretti family will have already taken credit for the hit. Grant will be the new boss of the Vale family, and Adrian will be sitting in a dark room drinking himself to death over his dead wife."
Elena closed her eyes. She didn't pray for herself. She pressed both her hands against her stomach, a silent, desperate apology to the child who would never see the light of day. I’m sorry, she thought. I’m so sorry I couldn't protect you.
The wall behind Lucas didn't just break; it vanished in a spectacular explosion of bricks, mortar, and steel armor.
A customized black SUV rammed directly through the exterior brickwork of the kitchen, crushing two of Lucas’s shooters beneath its massive tires. The driver's side door flew open before the vehicle had even stopped moving, and Adrian Vale stepped directly into the smoke, a heavy assault rifle in his hands.
He didn't speak. He didn't issue a warning.
Adrian opened fire with a terrifying, mechanical precision. The two remaining shooters near the hallway were torn apart before they could even adjust their aim. Adrian advanced through the ruins of the kitchen, his weapon spitting fire, his face an expressionless mask of absolute slaughter.
Lucas panicked, throwing Elena in front of him as a human shield and backing toward the shattered rear door. "Stay back, Adrian! I’ll blow her head off! I swear to God I’ll do it!"
Adrian stopped. The barrel of his rifle lowered slightly, but his eyes stayed locked on Lucas with a focus that made the security chief’s hands begin to shake.
"Lucas," Adrian said. His voice was incredibly quiet, almost gentle, which made it ten times more terrifying than a scream. "Look at the window behind you."
Lucas instinctively flicked his eyes toward the shattered glass. In that microsecond of distraction, Elena drove her elbow backward into Lucas’s taped shoulder wound. He groaned in agony, his grip loosening for a fraction of a second.

It was all Adrian needed.
He dropped his rifle, drew his semi-automatic from his hip, and fired a single round. The bullet caught Lucas exactly between the eyes. The security chief fell backward into the rain-drenched alley, his eyes wide and empty, dead before his body hit the asphalt.
