Chapter 6 - The Shadows of the Estate

The sun did not rise over the Vale estate on Saturday morning; the sky simply changed from pitch-black to a bruised, heavy gray.
Grant Mercer stood in Adrian’s study, a glass of twenty-year-old scotch in his hand, looking down at the empty mahogany desk. He had already drafted the transition paperwork. With Lucas confirming the hit on Elena in Boston, and Adrian presumably out of his mind with grief or hunting down false leads in the Moretti territory, the board of underbosses would meet at noon to confirm Grant’s ascension.
The heavy double doors of the study slid open with a smooth, silent motion.
Grant turned around, a reassuring smile already forming on his face. "Adrian! Thank god you’re back. We’ve been trying to reach Lucas, but his team went dark after they crossed the state line—"
The smile froze on Grant’s face as Adrian walked into the room.
The mafia boss wasn't alone. Behind him stood twelve of the family’s oldest capos—men who had sworn oaths to Adrian’s father thirty years ago on a bible slicked with oil and blood. Their faces were carved out of stone, their hands resting inside their coats.
"Adrian?" Grant’s voice lost its confident edge. He set the scotch glass down on the desk with a small, sharp click. "What’s going on here? Why are the capos here before the noon meeting?"
Adrian walked over to the desk, his movements slow, almost exhausted. He didn't look at Grant. He looked at the empty space where the pink-and-white pregnancy test had rested the night before.
"You know, Grant," Adrian said softly, his voice carrying an eerie, hypnotic calm. "When we were twenty-two, we sat on the docks in South Boston and watched the police drag my father’s car out of the water. You looked at me and said, 'As long as I’m alive, Adrian, nobody will ever catch you from behind.'"
Grant swallowed hard, his eyes darting toward the capos at the door. "I meant it, Adrian. I still mean it. We’re brothers."
"Brothers don't buy an electro-static plotter to print their sister's handwriting onto vintage paper," Adrian said, finally raising his eyes to meet Grant's. The sheer, freezing void in Adrian's gaze made Grant take a step back until his hips hit the edge of the mahogany desk.
"Adrian, listen to me—"
"Brothers don't pay Roland Pierce forty-two million dollars from a Delaware trust to falsify an audit," Adrian continued, his voice never rising above a conversational tone. "And brothers certainly don't send Lucas Benton to a Harrison Avenue safe house to execute a pregnant woman."
The word pregnant dropped into the room like a lead weight.
Grant’s face went completely grey. His hand instinctively twitched toward the holster hidden beneath his charcoal jacket, but before his fingers could even clear the fabric, three of the old capos stepped forward, their silenced pistols drawn and aimed directly at his chest.
"It’s over, Grant," Adrian whispered, stepping around the desk until he was inches from the man who had been his shadow for fourteen years. "I didn't bring you here to execute you in my father's room. That would be too clean for what you did to my wife. I’ve already delivered Roland Pierce to the federal prosecutor's office. He’s currently signing a thirty-page deposition that names you as the architect of the Whitmore Road ambush and the head of the Apex Holdings syndicate."
"You're destroying the family!" Grant snarled, his mask finally slipping away to reveal the feral, desperate animal beneath. "If you turn over those files, the Vales are done! The Morettis will take the docks within a week!"
"Let them," Adrian said, turning his back on his underboss. "Take him out of my sight."
The capos moved in, disarming Grant with brutal, practiced efficiency and dragging him out of the study. His curses echoed down the marble hallway until the heavy front doors slammed shut, leaving Adrian alone in the silence of his empire.
He walked over to the desk, picked up the phone, and dialed a number he had memorized every digit of. "Malcolm. Start the liquidation. Every asset, every shell company, every piece of real estate from New York to Maine. Sell it all to the highest bidder. I want every dime transferred into a clean trust in Switzerland under her name."

"And what about you, Adrian?" Malcolm asked through the line. "What happens to the Vale family?"
"The Vale family died in the storm on Thursday night," Adrian said, hanging up the phone. "Now I have to go see if the man can survive without it."
