Chapter 6 - The Betrayal Within

While Garrett organized his strategy, Maeve walked through the estate's private art gallery on the second floor, holding Clara in her arms.
The gallery contained millions of dollars of rare paintings, many of which Maeve had helped restore four years ago when she first met Garrett.
Suddenly, a quiet voice spoke from the shadowed doorway.
"It really is remarkable how a simple girl from Queens can cause so much damage."
Maeve whirled around. Standing in the doorway was Coraline Ashford, holding a silenced pistol, dressed in black leather.
Maeve gasped, stepping back and pulling Clara protectively behind her. "How did you get in here?!"
"Your mother-in-law Eleanor has many friends inside these walls," Coraline sneered, stepping into the room. "Did you really think a few guards could keep me out? My father wants Garrett destroyed, but I want you dead, Maeve."
Clara began to cry, sensing the danger.
"Leave the baby out of this, Coraline," Maeve pleaded, her voice trembling but her body held firm between the gun and her child. "Garrett never loved you. The wedding was just a business deal!"
"And business is what keeps us alive!" Coraline spat, raising the gun directly at Maeve's chest. "Without you, Garrett would have signed the paper. You ruined my life!"
CLICK.
A cold metal barrel pressed against the back of Coraline's neck.
"Drop the weapon, Coraline," Wesley’s harsh voice echoed behind her.
Coraline froze. She slowly lowered her gun, cursing under her breath. Two Hail guards rushed into the gallery, seizing her arms and wrenching the pistol from her grip.
Garrett walked into the room a second later, his face thunderous. He swept Maeve and Clara into his arms, checking them for injuries before turning his dark gaze to Coraline.

"Your father sent you to do his dirty work?" Garrett asked coldly.
"No," Coraline spat. "I came myself. And my father's men are already breaching your eastern perimeter, Garrett! You're surrounded!"
