Chapter 5 - The Unspoken Vow

The silence that followed her confession was different from the cold, violent quiet that usually surrounded Callum Vale.
It was soft, warm, and charged with a deep, electric current that made the breath catch in both their throats.
Callum stared at her. For three years, he had regarded Maeve Donnelly as a quiet, efficient shadow—a girl who moved through his mansion like a soft breeze, polishing silver, arranging flowers, and leaving hot tea on his desk. He had convinced himself that he barely noticed her.
He was a liar.
He had noticed the way her dark hair caught the morning sunlight through the library windows. He had noticed the quiet grace of her walk, the soft, melodious tone of her voice when she spoke to the kitchen staff, and the fierce, unyielding dignity she maintained despite wearing a simple maid’s apron.
He had kept his distance because he was a monster whose hands were washed in blood, and she was pure, innocent light.
And now, that pure light was sitting in his brother’s room, bruised and broken because she had chosen to protect him.
"You knew about the medical bills?" Callum asked softly, his fingers gently brushing against her skirt.
"I found the ledger entry in the estate office two years ago," Maeve admitted, a small, sad smile touching her lips. "Seventy-two thousand dollars. You stamped it 'Paid in Full - Anonymous Sponsor'. You didn't even want me to thank you."
"I didn't want you to feel obligated to stay," Callum murmured, his voice dropping into a thick, gravelly register. "I wanted you to be free, Maeve."
"I stayed because I wanted to stay," she said firmly, her dark eyes looking straight into his soul. "I stayed because this house was cold and empty, and you were eating dinner alone every single night."
Callum let out a ragged breath. He reached up, his massive, scarred hand cupping the uninjured side of her face, his thumb gently smoothing over her cheekbone.
"I am a dangerous man, Maeve," Callum whispered, his eyes searching hers with desperate intensity. "The men I fight don't have rules. They hurt women. They burn homes. If you stay near me after tonight, they will come for you again."
"They already came for me, Callum," she said softly, using his first name for the very first time in three years.
Hearing his name on her lips hit him like a physical blow. A shiver ran down his spine.
Before he could answer, the silver satellite phone on the nightstand vibrated loudly, breaking the spell.
Callum stood up slowly, picking up the phone and pressing it to his ear. "Talk to me, Marcus."
"Boss," his head security chief barked through the speaker. "We caught a scout near the south perimeter fence. He was carrying a thermal scanner and a suppressed submachine gun. He's got the Sterling & Vance anchor tattoo on his neck."
Callum’s expression instantly returned to stone. The tender, vulnerable man disappeared, replaced in a fraction of a second by the ruthless Mafia Lord of Boston Harbor.
"Is he breathing?" Callum asked coldly.
"He's breathing," Marcus confirmed. "We have him in the basement at Warehouse 9."
"Keep him alive," Callum commanded. "I'm coming down. And tell Marcus to bring Arthur Sterling to Pier 4 at three o'clock tomorrow morning."
"Understood, Boss."
Callum ended the call and turned back to Maeve. He walked over to a heavy wooden wardrobe, pulled out a thick dark wool blanket, and draped it carefully over her shoulders.
"There is a locked steel door behind that tapestry," Callum said, pointing to a silk hanging on the west wall. "It leads to a safe room with a landline that connects directly to the precinct commander. If anyone touches the door to this room while I am gone, go inside and lock it."
"Callum," Maeve called out as he turned toward the doorway. "Please... be careful."

Callum stopped. He turned his head, looking back at her over his shoulder in the dim firelight.
"They took a pipe to your wrist, Maeve," Callum said smoothly, his eyes flashing with a cold, terrifying promise. "Careful isn't on the menu tonight."
