Chapter 9 - MENDING BROKEN HEARTS

Spring arrived in Las Lomas, bringing warm breezes and vibrant pink bougainvillea blossoms that climbed the high stone walls of the estate.

The grand mansion, once silent and cold like a museum, was now filled with life. Toys were scattered across the living room rug, children's songs echoed from the stereo, and the smell of fresh homemade bakery filled the massive kitchen every morning.

Alejandro had officially established the Sofia & Mateo Santillán Educational Foundation, allocating millions of dollars to build modern schools and healthcare clinics for low-income families in Ecatepec—ensuring that Mariana’s hometown received the dignity and resources it deserved.

One serene afternoon, Alejandro took Lucía out into the sunlit gardens. They walked toward a quiet corner near the stone fountain where a beautiful marble monument had been erected in memory of Sofia and Mateo.

Lucía held a bouquet of fresh yellow sunflowers. She placed them gently at the base of the monument.

"Uncle Alejandro?" Lucía asked, looking up at him with her big, innocent eyes.

"Yes, my sweet girl?" Alejandro replied, kneeling beside her on the grass.

"Are my original Mommy and Daddy in heaven?" she asked softly.

Alejandro felt a soft tug at his heartstrings. He pulled her close, wrapping his arm around her tiny shoulders. "Yes, Lucía. They are in heaven. And they are looking down on you every single day, so proud of how brave, kind, and beautiful you are."

"Do they like my drawings?" Lucía asked, offering a big smile.

"They love your drawings," Alejandro laughed softly, kissing the top of her head. "Especially the yellow ones."

Mariana walked down the stone path, holding a camera. She stopped, watching the billionaire who had once shut himself off from the entire world now kneeling in the grass, laughing happily with her daughter.

Alejandro looked up and saw Mariana standing there, looking breathtaking in the sunlight. He stood up, took Lucía’s hand, and walked over to her.

"Mariana," Alejandro said softly, his voice full of deep emotion. "There’s one more secret I need to confess to you."

Mariana smiled, teasing him gently. "Another locked drawer, Mr. Santillán?"

"No," Alejandro said, taking a small velvet box from his jacket pocket and dropping to one knee on the garden path. "No more drawers. Just my heart."

Mariana’s hands flew to her mouth as her eyes filled with happy tears.

Alejandro opened the box, revealing a magnificent ring featuring a radiant yellow diamond surrounded by small blue sapphires—matching the exact colors Lucía had painted on his face that rainy afternoon.

"Mariana," Alejandro said, looking up into her eyes with raw, honest devotion. "You walked into my cold house and taught me how to live again. You and Lucía gave this mansion a soul. I love you with everything I have. Will you marry me and make me the happiest man alive?"

Lucía jumped up and down, clapping her hands excitedly. "Say yes, Mommy! Say yes so Mr. Big House can be my real Daddy!"

Mariana laughed through her happy tears, kneeling down and throwing her arms around Alejandro’s neck.

"Yes!" Mariana cried out, kissing him deeply under the warm afternoon sun. "Yes, a thousand times yes!"
