Chapter 5 - The Safehouse in the Pines

The high-pitched whine of the twin turbine engines filled the cabin of Marcus’s private Sikorsky helicopter as it sliced through the heavy cloud cover above the Sierra Nevada mountains.

Below them, endless miles of dark pine forests and jagged, snow-capped peaks stretched out in every direction.

Inside the cabin, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense. Marcus sat near the window, a tactical laptop open on his knees, satellite feeds showing the nationwide manhunt for Vance Sterling. Across from him sat Rosa, clutching Lily tightly against her chest. Lily was wrapped in a thick wool blanket, sleeping soundly despite the roaring engines.

"We're ten minutes out from the Lake Tahoe compound, Mr. Whitmore," Captain Briggs reported from the jump seat, checking his tactical sidearm before holstering it. "The property is completely off-grid. Reinforced steel construction, independent satellite communications, and a ten-man elite security team already on-site. Sterling’s people won't even know this valley exists."

Marcus nodded slowly, but his mind refused to relax.

When the threat against Lily had come in, Marcus hadn't hesitated for a single second. He had bypassed his usual corporate security protocols, chartered a dark flight, and evacuated Rosa and her daughter out of the city before Vance Sterling’s hired guns could even locate their target.

He looked over at Rosa. Her face was pale, her eyes wide with a mixture of exhaustion and terror.

"I'm sorry I dragged you into this, Rosa," Marcus said, his voice dropping into a gentle cadence over the headset intercom. "You brought Lily to my home to give her a peaceful life, not to end up fleeing in a helicopter from a desperate criminal."

Rosa looked up, shaking her head softly. "You didn't drag us into this, Marcus. Victoria and Sterling did. You are doing everything in your power to protect my daughter. I have never had anyone fight for us like this."

She reached out, her fingers brushing against Marcus’s arm. "Not even her father."

Marcus looked down at her hand, then up into her eyes. In the dim, ambient red light of the helicopter cabin, he saw a strength in Rosa that went far beyond physical courage. She was a mother who would walk through fire for her child—a stark contrast to the self-obsessed elite socialites Marcus had spent his entire adult life surrounded by.

"I won't let anything happen to either of you," Marcus promised, wrapping his hand over hers. "I give you my word on my life."

The helicopter began its descent, banking steeply over a thick canopy of pine trees before settling smoothly onto a cleared, lit helipad in the middle of a secluded mountain valley.

The compound looked less like a luxury chalet and more like a modern fortress—thick stone walls, dark glass windows designed to withstand high-caliber rounds, and high-voltage security fencing surrounding the ten-acre perimeter.

As the rotor blades spun down, the cabin door slid open, letting in a rush of freezing mountain air.

Two armed guards in white winter camo greeted them on the tarmac, escorting Marcus, Rosa, and Lily quickly into the warm, timber-framed interior of the compound.

Inside, a massive stone fireplace crackled, warming the vaulted living room.

"Get them settled in the master suite on the upper level," Marcus instructed the head guard. "Set up a perimeter defense grid. No one enters or leaves this valley without my personal clearance."

While the security team mobilized, Marcus walked to the floor-to-ceiling windows looking out over the dark lake. He pulled out his phone and dialed Arthur Vance.

"Arthur," Marcus said the moment the call connected. "Status report."

"It’s a mess in the city, Marcus," Arthur’s voice sounded muffled over the satellite line. "The FBI has seized Sterling’s main residences, but he’s gone underground. We intercepted a transaction from one of his untraceable Cayman accounts—five million dollars wired to an international mercenary syndicate known as the Vanguard Group three hours ago."

Marcus’s jaw tightened. "He’s using hired guns to buy him a route out of the country."

"Or to settle his score before he leaves," Arthur warned. "Marcus, you need to stay locked down in that mountainside compound. If Sterling discovers where you took Rosa and Lily—"

May you like

"He won't," Marcus said coldly. "The flight plan was wiped from the FAA database, and we used a black-budget charter. We are ghosts up here."

Just as Marcus ended the call, the lights inside the compound flickered once, twice... and then plunged the entire house into pitch-black darkness.
