Chapter 10 - The Bright Yellow House

The warm spring sun was setting over the rolling hills of Napa Valley, casting a rich, golden light over the endless green vineyards and wildflower fields.

Standing on a gentle crest overlooking the valley was a magnificent, newly built craftsman home—painted a soft, warm yellow, with white trim, a wide wrap-around porch, and heavy stone chimneys.

It was the exact house from Lily’s drawing.

Down on the green lawn, five-year-old Lily was chasing a fluffy Golden Retriever puppy Marcus had given her for her birthday, her bright laughter floating across the quiet valley breeze.

On the front porch swing, Rosa sat resting her head comfortably against Marcus’s shoulder. She wore a soft knit sweater, her hands folded over her stomach—where a gentle, noticeable bump showed that their family was about to grow by one more.

Marcus held her close, his thumb slowly caressing her arm as they watched their daughter play.

"She’s so happy here, Marcus," Rosa whispered softly, looking out at the golden sunset.

"We all are," Marcus replied, leaning down to kiss her temple. "The city was where we fought our battles, Rosa. This is where we live our life."

Lily came running up the porch steps, panting happily, the golden puppy trotting excitedly right behind her. She threw her small arms around both of their knees, burying her face into their lap.

"Look, Mommy! Look, Mr. Mark!" Lily cheered, pointing out at the horizon where the sun was dipping below the mountains, painting the sky in brilliant shades of pink, orange, and purple. "The sky has stars coming out!"

Marcus reached down, lifting Lily up onto the swing between him and Rosa, wrapping his arms around both of the women who had transformed his world.

"It certainly does, Lily," Marcus smiled, looking out at the peaceful valley, his heart fuller than he had ever thought possible.

There were no corporate battles left to fight. No betrayals lurking in dark hallways. No shadows haunting their home.

Just the warm breeze, the sweet sound of a child’s laughter, and the bright yellow house that love had built.
