Chapter 5 - Unlocking the Vault

The Charlotte Royal Trust building stood as a imposing monolith of granite and glass in the heart of the financial sector. Though it was nearly 3:00 AM, the emergency lights illuminated the grand marble lobby.

Nathaniel’s security team cleared the perimeter before escorting Nathaniel, Claire, and Lucy inside through the private executive entrance. The bank manager, a nervous middle-aged man named Henderson who had been woken up by an emergency call from Nathaniel's legal team, was waiting by the heavy brass elevator doors.

"Mr. Cole," Henderson stammered, adjusting his tie with trembling hands. "I received the clearance from the board, but opening Vault B at this hour requires dual verification..."

"I have both keys, Henderson," Nathaniel said, his voice cold and commanding. "Take us down."

The private elevator descended deep beneath the city streets, humming softly until it settled into the reinforced subterranean vault. Heavy steel doors swung open to reveal rows of metallic safety deposit boxes stretching down a brightly lit corridor.

Henderson led them to section 400, stopping before box 412.

"The dual key mechanism, sir," Henderson said, stepping back.

Nathaniel stepped forward. He motioned for Claire to join him.

Side by side, they stood before the metallic wall. Claire held the tarnished silver key her father had hidden for eleven years, while Nathaniel held the platinum key left by his father.

"Together," Nathaniel whispered.

Claire looked at him, her eyes reflecting deep trust. "Together."

They inserted their respective keys into the dual keyholes simultaneously. On Nathaniel's count of three, they turned the keys in unison.

A heavy mechanical click echoed through the silent vault. The heavy iron door of Box 412 popped open.

Nathaniel reached inside and pulled out a thick, black leather-bound journal, alongside a stack of encrypted flash drives and original financial ledgers bearing the official corporate seal of Cole Meridian.

Nathaniel opened the journal to the last entry, dated November 12th, eleven years ago—the exact night his parents died.

His father's distinct handwriting filled the page:

"If you are reading this, Nathaniel, then Richard has made his move. He has been embezzling hundreds of millions through Apex Holdings to fund illegal offshore weapons trade. Arthur Vance discovered the ledger today. Richard knows we have the proof. If anything happens to us, trust Arthur. Protect his daughter Claire. The enclosed drives contain every transaction, every bank account, and the recorded phone call where Richard hired the chemical lab in Zurich to synthesize the toxin."

Nathaniel's hands shook with suppressed rage and grief. The truth was finally here, black and white, undeniable. His parents hadn't died of natural causes; they had been executed because they stood in the way of Richard's unbridled greed.

"My father was innocent," Claire murmured, tears streaming down her face as she looked over Nathaniel's shoulder. "He didn't betray anyone. He tried to save them."

"He was a hero, Claire," Nathaniel said softly, turning to her. "And so are you."

Suddenly, the heavy security doors of the vault behind them slammed shut with a deafening bang.

The mechanical lock engaged with a menacing hiss.

Through the vault's armored glass observation window, a tall, distinguished figure stepped into view, surrounded by four heavily armed mercenaries.

It was Uncle Richard Cole.
