Chapter 9 - Promises in the Sun

Six months later, the Cole estate hosted an event unlike any it had seen in its long history.
There were no stuffy corporate galas, no tense board meetings, and no security guards standing with hidden weapons in every shadow. Instead, fairy lights hung from the ancient oak trees, and soft classical music drifted across the manicured lawns.
It was the wedding of Nathaniel Cole and Claire Vance.
The guest list was small—only true friends, trusted allies like Marcus Vance and Dr. Pierce, and staff members who had proven their loyalty over the years.
Claire walked down the garden aisle in a breathtaking, simple white lace dress that flowed gracefully with the gentle breeze. In her hands, she carried a bouquet of white roses and lavender—her father's favorite flowers.
Walking ahead of her as the flower girl was Lucy, wearing a little white dress with a pink ribbon around her waist. She tossed flower petals onto the path with pure delight, her tiny face lit up with an unclouded joy.
Nathaniel stood at the altar under a canopy of blooming jasmine, wearing a tailored black tuxedo. As he watched Claire approach, his heart filled with a profound gratitude that no amount of wealth could ever buy.
When Claire reached his side, Nathaniel took her hands.
The officiant spoke, but when it came time for the vows, Nathaniel turned directly to Claire and spoke both aloud and in clear, fluent American Sign Language so that Lucy, sitting in the front row, could understand every word.
"Claire," Nathaniel said, his voice steady and full of emotion. "You came into my life during my darkest hour. You brought truth, courage, and light back into a house that had been cold for eleven years. I promise to cherish you, honor you, and protect you and Lucy with everything I am. Today, my heart is whole again."
Claire smiled through joyful tears, signing back as she spoke her vows:
May you like
"Nathaniel, you showed us what true strength and kindness look like. You gave my daughter a home, and you gave me a love I never thought I would find. I promise to stand by your side through every storm and every sunshine, for the rest of our lives."
As they exchanged rings, the guests applauded warmly. Nathaniel pulled Claire into his arms, kissing her deeply as the sun began to set over the rolling hills of North Carolina, bathing the entire estate in a warm, golden glow.
