Chapter 3 - The Aftershocks

The silence that followed Lily’s artistic endeavor felt heavy enough to crush concrete.

Rachel was already on her knees, her hands pressed against the floor, begging for forgiveness, while Natalie stood frozen in the doorway, convinced she was about to watch her sister and niece get thrown out into the freezing Ohio mud—or worse.

Yet Adrian Vale remained motionless.

He sat behind his massive desk with a bright green crayon line running down his face, staring down at the little girl who was currently inspecting her handiwork with the critical eye of a Renaissance master.

“You think I look unhappy?” Adrian asked, his deep voice carrying a strange, low rumble.

“Yes,” Lily nodded sagely.

“And the green line fixes that?”

“No,” Lily replied honestly. “But it helps.”

Then came the sound. That low, gravelly, startled laugh that broke six years of emotional winter inside the Vale estate.

When Adrian touched the green wax with two fingers and looked at the color smeared across his skin, a ghost of a smile touched the corner of his lips.

“Mommy,” Lily whispered loudly, turning to look at Rachel, who was still kneeling on the rug in absolute terror. “I think he likes it.”

Adrian looked past the child, his slate-gray eyes locking onto Rachel. The terrifying coldness in his gaze had vanished, replaced by an unsettling, sharp curiosity.

“Get up off the floor, Mrs. Bennett,” Adrian said smoothly, his voice returning to its normal, commanding cadence. “You’re dirtying my rug.”

Rachel scrambled to her feet, her hands shaking. “Mr. Vale, I... I swear she won't ever enter this room again. I’ll pack our bags. We’ll leave right now.”

“Leave?” Adrian raised an eyebrow. He picked up a linen handkerchief from his desk and casually wiped the green wax from his cheek. “And where would you go, Mrs. Bennett? The gate guards logged your arrival at six this morning. They also logged a black Ford sedan parked three miles down the county road with two men sitting in it who didn't look like they were out bird-watching.”

Rachel went entirely pale. “Thomas...”

Adrian stood up, towering over the desk. His presence was overwhelming, filling the grand study with an inescapable authority. “Your husband has a bench warrant out of Cuyahoga County for violating a protection order. In this house, nobody gets past the iron gates without my say-so. If Mr. Miller wants his wife and daughter, he can come try to take them through my security team. But until then... you stay.”

May you like

He looked down at Lily, who was now examining the brass paperweights on his desk.

“As for the artist,” Adrian added, a faint, dry smirk touching his lips, “she has better taste in color than my interior decorator. You’re dismissed, Mrs. Bennett. Both of you.”
