Chapter 9 - The Confession

Three weeks later, spring finally broke across northern Ohio, washing the rolling hills of Chagrin Falls in brilliant green and blooming wildflowers.
The atmosphere inside the Vale estate had undergone a transformation so radical that even Mrs. Gable was caught smiling in the hallways. The locked doors of Sophie’s room remained closed for a little while longer, but the piano room—silent for six years—now echoed every afternoon with the clumsy, joyful plinking of a three-year-old girl learning how to play Chopsticks under Rachel’s patient guidance.
Adrian found himself spending less time behind his massive desk and more time sitting on the back veranda with a cup of black coffee, watching Lily chase butterflies across the manicured lawn.
One evening, as the sun dipped below the tree line, painting the sky in strokes of gold and violet, Natalie walked up to Adrian on the veranda. She held a stack of evening reports, but her hands were trembling slightly.
“Mr. Vale,” Natalie said quietly.
Adrian turned, looking at her with polite neutrality. “Yes, Natalie?”
She swallowed hard, finally letting go of the bitterness she had harbored for weeks. “I... I wanted to apologize. For my attitude lately. I know I haven't been performing my duties with the professionalism you deserve.”
Adrian studied her for a moment. He saw the quiet resignation in her eyes—the realization that the fantasy she had built in her head for five years was never going to happen.
“You’ve been a loyal employee, Natalie,” Adrian said gently, choosing his words with care. “And your dedication to this estate hasn't gone unnoticed. But you were looking for something from me that I couldn't give. Not because of you... but because I was a dead man walking.”
Natalie looked down, a single tear escaping her eye before she quickly wiped it away. “Are you still a dead man, Mr. Vale?”
Adrian looked across the lawn toward the veranda steps, where Rachel was standing with a warm, gentle smile, holding a fresh glass of iced tea for him.

Adrian gave Natalie a faint, honest smile.
“No,” Adrian said softly. “I think... I’m finally coming back to life.”
