Chapter 5 - The Shadows of the Past

By morning, the news of the internal coup attempt had swept through the upper ranks of the New York underworld.
The Moretti mansion was locked down tight. Extra enforcers guarded the perimeter walls, and dark SUVs lined the long driveway.
In the sunlit breakfast room on the second floor, the mood was vast contrast to the dark violence of the cellar.
Sophia sat at the long mahogany table, wearing a simple navy wool dress provided by the house stylist. Across from her, Emma was happily dipping strawberries into whipped cream, her pink rabbit backpack sitting proudly on the chair beside her.
The double doors opened, and Aleandro walked in.
He had showered, shaved, and was dressed in a perfectly tailored dark charcoal suit, his dark hair combed back smoothly. He looked every bit the supreme Don, yet as he approached the table, his posture softened slightly.
"Good morning, Emma," Aleandro said, sitting at the head of the table.
"Good morning, Mr. Boss," Emma said, her mouth full of strawberry.
Sophia let out a soft, nervous cough. "Emma, be polite."
"It's fine," Aleandro said, a rare, faint smile touching his lips. "I like 'Mr. Boss.' It sounds distinguished."
He looked at Sophia, his gray eyes taking in her rested face, though he could see the lingering anxiety behind her blue eyes.
"Did you sleep well?" he asked.
"As well as I could," Sophia admitted, setting her teacup down. "Mr. Moretti... what happens now? The police... the media..."
"The District Attorney dropped all charges thirty minutes ago," Aleandro informed her calmly. "The police chief personally destroyed the fake evidence file. Your bank account has been cleared of the fraudulent wire transfer, and my attorneys have scrubbed your name from every public record."
Sophia let out a deep breath she felt like she’d been holding for twenty-four hours. "Thank you."
"However," Aleandro continued, his tone turning serious, "there is another matter we must discuss."
He pulled a thin, dark brown leather document folder from his inner jacket pocket and laid it on the table between them.
Sophia frowned. "What is that?"
"Three years ago, your husband, Thomas Carter, died on a construction site at Dock 14," Aleandro said softly.
Sophia’s breath caught in her throat. The pain of that loss was still a raw, aching wound. "Yes. They said it was an equipment failure. An accident."
"It wasn't an accident," Aleandro revealed quietly.
Sophia froze. The room felt suddenly dead silent. "What did you say?"
Aleandro opened the folder, revealing old corporate memos, shipping receipts, and safety reports bearing Julian Moretti’s signature.
"My brother was managing the Dock 14 expansion project," Aleandro explained, his voice filled with quiet regret. "He was cutting corners, using cheap steel, and embezzling funds from the safety budgets. Your husband discovered the structural flaw in the crane support. He threatened to go to the federal inspectors."
Tears welled up in Sophia’s eyes, her hands trembling on the table. "Thomas... Thomas told me he was worried about the crane... he said his manager wouldn't listen..."
"Julian ordered his men to disable the safety release valve on the crane," Aleandro said, his jaw tightening in anger. "They made it look like a tragic mechanical failure. They paid off the local coroner and gave you a tiny insurance settlement to keep you quiet."
Sophia covered her mouth with her hand, a heartbroken sob escaping her lips.
Thomas hadn't been careless. He hadn't made a mistake. He had been murdered because he was a good man who refused to stay silent about corruption.
"I didn't know, Sophia," Aleandro said, leaning forward, his gray eyes burning with genuine remorse. "I was running our overseas operations in Europe when the accident happened. If I had known my brother had murdered an innocent worker on my docks, Julian would have been in prison three years ago."
Sophia looked at the documents, her tears falling onto the dark leather cover. "He took Emma’s father... he left us with nothing... we were starving, Mr. Moretti! I had to beg for this maid job just to buy Emma’s EpiPens!"
"I know," Aleandro whispered, reaching across the table.
For the first time, he placed his large hand over hers, offering a steady, unwavering warmth.
"And that is why Julian will never see the light of day again," Aleandro vowed softly. "And that is why you and Emma will never starve, never beg, and never suffer again as long as I draw breath."
Emma looked up from her strawberries, sensing her mother's distress. She slid off her chair, walked over to Sophia, and hugged her waist tightly.

"Don't cry, Mommy," Emma whispered. "Mr. Boss is going to protect us now."
Aleandro looked down at the little girl, and then up at Sophia. The unspoken vow hung in the air between them, heavier than any legal contract, stronger than any mafia oath.
