Chapter 9 - The Battle for the Nursery

Back at the Moretti mansion, the peace of the spring evening had been shattered into bloody chaos.
Alarm sirens blared through the halls. The glass of the grand conservatory had been blown inward, and three dark-clad Genovese mercenaries were moving through the ground floor, suppressed weapons raised.
In the second-floor nursery wing, Sophia locked the heavy oak door, throwing the heavy iron security bolt into place.
"Mommy... what's that noise?" Emma cried, clutching Miss Pearl, her rabbit backpack, and her puppy in the corner of the room.
"Stay quiet, baby," Sophia whispered desperately, pushing a heavy mahogany wardrobe against the door to reinforce the barricade. "Stay under the bed with Barnaby."
Sophia’s heart hammered violently against her ribs. She didn't have a weapon. She was a housekeeper, a mother, a widow.
Then her eyes fell on the wall safe near Aleandro’s desk in the adjoining sitting room—a safe Aleandro had taught her how to open three weeks ago "just in case."
Sophia ran to the safe, her hands trembling as she dialed the combination: 0-5-1-4—Emma’s birthday.
The heavy steel door clicked open.
Inside lay a black heavy-caliber revolver and two spare magazines.
Sophia grabbed the gun. It was heavy, cold, and terrifying in her hands. She had never fired a weapon in her life, but as she looked back at her daughter hiding under the bed, something ancient and fierce awoke inside her chest.
A mother protecting her child.
BANG!
The nursery door shook violently as an explosive charge blew the lock off its hinges.
The heavy oak door splintered, and the wardrobe was shoved aside as a massive mercenary stepped through the smoke, his assault rifle raised.
"Clear!" the mercenary shouted into his radio. "I found the girl—"
CLANG-BANG!
Sophia stepped out from behind the doorframe, holding the revolver with both hands, and pulled the trigger.
The recoil slammed into her wrists, sending the shot wild, punching a hole through the drywall inches from the mercenary's head.
The mercenary stumbled back in shock, surprised that the maid was armed. He raised his rifle to aim—
Suddenly, a loud, piercing silver sound echoed through the hallway.
It was the whistle.
From under the bed, Emma was blowing the silver signal whistle Aleandro had given her on the first day, the sharp sound echoing through the house like a siren.
At that exact moment, the window of the nursery exploded inward.
Aleandro Moretti didn't wait for the front door. He had scaled the exterior ivy trellis like a phantom, swinging through the glass with his heavy weapon raised.
He landed on his feet in the middle of the nursery, firing three rapid shots into the mercenary’s chest before the man could even pull his trigger.
The mercenary collapsed flat onto the floor, dead before he hit the rug.
Silence reclaimed the room, save for the blaring security alarms downstairs.
Aleandro spun around, his suit torn, his face covered in glass dust and blood from the docks, his gray eyes wild with frantic panic.
"SOPHIA! EMMA!" he screamed.
Sophia dropped the revolver onto the floor, collapsing forward into his arms.
Aleandro caught her, pulling her tightly against his chest, wrapping his arms around her so hard she could barely breathe. He buried his face in her hair, his body trembling violently with pure relief.
"I have you... I have you..." he choked out, his voice cracking with uncharacteristic emotion. "You're safe... God forgive me, you're safe..."
Emma crawled out from under the bed, holding her rabbit and her whistle, and wrapped her small arms around both of their legs.
Aleandro dropped to his knees, pulling both mother and daughter into an embrace so tight, so fierce, that no dark force in New York could ever break it.
Downstairs, Marco and the remaining Moretti guards finished securing the estate, eliminating the remaining intruders.
In the quiet, smoke-filled nursery, Aleandro pulled back slightly, framing Sophia’s tear-stained face with his large hands.
"I am never letting you out of my sight again," he vowed, his gray eyes burning with absolute, profound devotion. "I love you, Sophia. I love both of you."
May you like
Sophia looked into the eyes of the man who had fought through hell to protect her child, and smiled through her tears.
"I love you too, Aleandro," she whispered.
