Chapter 9 - The New Dawn

Two years later.
The summer sun burned hot and gold over the Chesapeake Bay.
I stood on the deck of our private sailboat, the wind whipping through my dark hair, holding the wooden helm as we skimmed across the crystal-blue water off the coast of Annapolis.
Beside me, Marcus was adjusting the main sail, his sleeves rolled up, his skin tanned from long weekends spent on the water. We had been married four months ago in a small, private ceremony on the very docks our father had built.
In the bow of the boat, Tobias was sitting on the wooden deck railing, holding a broad-shouldered, two-year-old boy in his arms—his adopted son, Leo, whom Tobias had legally brought into his life through a private agency two years prior.
"Look at the spray, Leo!" Tobias laughed, pointing toward the white foam curling off the bow. "That's Vance Maritime engineering at work!"
The little boy giggled, clapping his tiny hands together in delight.
I looked back at Marcus, who reached over and wrapped his strong arm around my waist, pulling me close against his side as the boat sliced through the waves.
"Happy?" Marcus asked quietly, kissing the top of my head.
"I didn't know life could feel this light," I admitted, resting my head against his shoulder. "For so long, every breath felt like a fight."

"The fight is over, my love," Marcus whispered. "Now we just live."
I looked down at my hand resting on the helm. On my ring finger, a simple, elegant sapphire band sparkled in the sunlight—no lies, no deceit, no hidden motives. Just pure, grounded love built on truth and mutual respect.
