Chapter 10 - The Melody of the House

Nathaniel dropped to one knee in the center of the grand ballroom, the very space that replaced the old, dark study. He pulled out a small, beautifully crafted ring—not a flawless, corporate diamond meant for a tabloid headline, but a delicate gold band set with a rare, uncut emerald, raw and resilient, surrounded by tiny, brilliant sapphires that looked like sparks of fire.
"Elena Marsh," he said, his voice thick with an emotion he had hidden for thirty-three years. "You noticed me when I was invisible to myself. You ran into the fire for a man who didn't know how to say thank you. I still don't have the words to match what you give me every single day. But I want to spend the rest of my life trying to find them. Will you marry me?"
Elena covered her mouth with her hands, the pink scars flashing in the warm light of the chandeliers. The room was perfectly still, waiting.
"Yes," she whispered, the word carrying clearly through the silent room. "Yes, Nathaniel."
The applause that erupted was deafening, filled with genuine joy from the people who truly knew them. Nathaniel slid the ring onto her finger, stood up, and pulled her into a deep, desperate embrace, lifting her slightly off the floor.
Later that night, long after the guests had departed and the lights had been dimmed, the manor settled into its quietest hour. But it wasn't the empty, heavy quiet that Nathaniel had feared for so many years. It was a peaceful, living stillness.
They stood together at the large window of the library, looking out at the city lights. Nathaniel held her tightly against his chest, his hands folded over hers.

"I love you, Elena," he whispered into her hair. The words were soft, spoken in the dark, but they didn't need to be loud. The house around them, built from the ashes of their past, already knew it.
Elena smiled, leaning back against him, her heart completely at rest. And as the moon climbed high above the twelve chimneys of Ashford Manor, she began to hum a soft, beautiful melody—the sweetest, most alive sound in the world.
