Chapter 8 - The Aftermath of the Storm

The fallout was swift and merciless. The Vance family empire collapsed overnight under the weight of arson charges, corporate fraud, and insider trading. Lady Eleanor, disgraced by her association with the plot and her attempt to cover up the initial findings, quietly retired to a secluded estate in Europe, stripped of her influence over the Ashford board.
Ashford Manor was undergoing reconstruction. The blackened beams were torn down, replaced by bright, open spaces, large windows that let in the morning light, and a kitchen that was designed not to hide the staff, but to be the heart of the home.
Elena stood in the center of the half-finished library, the scent of fresh pine and paint replacing the memory of ash. She was wearing jeans and an old sweater, looking out over the lawns where she had once run for her life.
Nathaniel walked in, his limp barely noticeable now. He didn’t wear his corporate suits anymore when he was with her; he looked relaxed, grounded, and profoundly at peace.
"The architects want to know what color to paint the shelves," he said, wrapping his arms around her waist from behind, resting his chin on her shoulder.
"Dark mahogany," she said without hesitation. "It holds the light better."
"Mahogany it is," he murmured, kissing the side of her neck.
Elena turned in his arms, looking up into his clear gray eyes. "It still feels like a dream sometimes. A few months ago, I was pouring coffee for two dollars an hour, waiting for the world to tell me where to go."
May you like
"You saved my life, Elena. Not just from the fire, but from the silence," he said softly. "The board asked me today who was going to manage the new Ashford Charitable Foundation. I told them I knew someone who has spent her whole life putting others first, and it’s time the world gave her the resources to do it on a massive scale."
Elena’s eyes filled with tears, but this time, they were tears of overwhelming joy. "I'd like that. I'd like that very much."
