Chapter 1 - The Secret in the Paper Bag

The neon lights of the precinct buzzed overhead, casting a sterile glare on the wet floor where Emily stood. Rainwater dripped from her matted hair, mixing with the mud on her bare feet. Officer Donovan knelt before her, his hands extended open in a universal gesture of peace.

"Emily, who's inside the bag?" Donovan asked again, his voice dropping an octave to soothe the trembling girl.

Emily’s fingers tightened around the crinkled brown paper. Slowly, tentatively, she peeled back the top edge. Donovan braced himself for something horrific—a crime scene remnant, a weapon, or worse. Instead, a soft, iridescent blue glow emanated from the darkness of the bag.

Two large, luminous cybernetic eyes blinked up at Donovan. It was a mechanical creature, no larger than a kitten, resembling a sleek, metallic fox mixed with advanced holographic components. It let out a soft, melodic whirring sound, nuzzling against Emily’s small hands.

"This is Barnaby," Emily whispered, fresh tears streaming down her face. "He’s... he’s my dad’s final project. They killed my parents tonight, Officer. They’re coming for him next. You can't let them take him."

Before Donovan could process the impossible sight, the heavy glass doors of the precinct rattled. Three men in immaculate, tailored dark suits stepped inside, their faces expressionless, their eyes shielded by midnight-black sunglasses despite the storm outside.

The air in the room instantly turned to ice.
