Chapter 6 - Night of the Wolves

“Stay down!” Miles shouted, dragging Evelyn and Everett toward the back hallway.

The cabin’s floor-to-ceiling glass windows shattered into thousands of deadly fragments as heavy automatic gunfire tore through the living room. Wood splinters flew through the air like shrapnel.

Nora woke up screaming, clapping her hands over her ears.

“Nora! Come here!” Miles bellowed, sliding across the pine floor and wrapping his body over hers as bullets shredded the sofa above them.

Through the broken windows, dark figures in night-vision goggles poured into the house. Flashlights swept across the smoke-filled room.

“Check the body!” a guard shouted. “Vane wants Whitmore’s head!”

Miles didn't hesitate. He leaned around the corner of the kitchen island and fired the shotgun.

BOOM!

The heavy blast hit the lead mercenary in the chest, lifting him off his feet and throwing him back through the shattered window. The remaining guards immediately suppressed Miles’s position, bullets chewing through the kitchen cabinets, sending flour and glass raining down.

“Evelyn! Get Nora to the basement!” Miles yelled, racking another shell into the shotgun.

“Not without the laptop!” Everett shouted from the floor. Despite his paralysis, he was crawling across the hardwood, dragging his lower body by his elbows, his fingers hooked into the strap of the laptop bag.

A mercenary stepped into the kitchen corridor, raising a silenced pistol toward Everett’s back.

“Everett!” Miles screamed.

Miles lunged forward, tackling the mercenary to the floor. The two men crashed into the dining table, breaking it in half. The guard was larger, younger, and trained to kill; he quickly gained the upper hand, pinning Miles down and pressing his forearm against Miles’s throat.

Miles gasped for air, his vision turning black at the edges. He clawed uselessly at the guard’s tactical vest.

Suddenly, a tiny figure ran into the hall.

Nora, holding a heavy iron fireplace poker with both hands, swung it with all her small might, striking the mercenary directly in the side of his head.

THUD!

The guard groaned, his grip slipping from Miles’s neck. Miles instantly slammed his knee into the guard’s groin, threw him off, and grabbed the dropped pistol, firing two quick shots into the tactical vest. The guard went limp.

Miles grabbed Nora, pulling her into a fierce, shaking hug. “Are you okay, baby?”

“I hit the bad man!” Nora sobbed, her little chest heaving.

“You were amazing,” Miles whispered, tears in his eyes. “Now we have to finish this.”

Everett reached out, holding the laptop bag up. “The cellar door... under the rug in the pantry. It leads to an underground bunker connecting to the old logging tunnel. We can make it!”
