Chapter 8 - The Damning Echoes

The old suspension bridge swung wildly in the gale-force winds, its wooden planks rotting and covered in moss.

The Land Cruiser roared onto the structure, the wood groaning and snapping under the weight. Behind them, the lead mercenary SUV tried to follow, but its modern electronic stability system panicked on the shifting, unstable surface. The SUV skidded sideways, smashed through the rusted guardrail, and plunged three hundred feet into the roaring river below.

The second SUV slammed on its brakes, stopping at the bridge entrance.

Miles brought the Land Cruiser to a halt on the far side of the canyon, safe from pursuit. The old bridge was completely impassable now, its middle section destroyed by the crash.

Inside the quiet cab of the truck, the only sound was the heavy breathing of four survivors and the rhythmic patter of rain against the windshield.

Everett opened the laptop, its screen casting a bright blue glow over his pale, weathered face. He attached an acoustic microphone to the side of the casing.

“Nora,” Everett said softly, turning to face the little girl in the back seat. His voice was no longer that of a cold billionaire or a dying patient. It was the voice of a man who was asking for redemption. “Can you sing Mommy’s song one last time?”

Nora looked at her father. Miles nodded gently, giving her a reassuring smile.

Nora stepped up between the two front seats. She took a deep breath, closed her eyes, and began to sing into the microphone.

“Where the river meets the pine...

Keep your hand held close to mine...

Though the dark may hide the shore...

I will love you evermore...”

As her voice hit the high, trembling note at the end of the chorus, the digital interface on the laptop screen transformed. The red lock icons flashed green one by one.

ENCRYPTION OVERRIDDEN.

PROJECT LAZARUS UNLOCKED.

A series of audio files began to auto-play through the truck’s speakers.

The voice that filled the vehicle was unmistakably Marcus Vane’s, clear and crisp, recorded five years prior:

“Make sure Clara Vance’s car doesn't reach the bottom of the pass. Disable the primary brake sensors. If she dies, Everett will be broken. He’ll sign the patents over to me within six months. Do it tonight.”

Evelyn covered her mouth in horror. Miles stared at the screen, tears of grief and validation streaming down his face.

Everett touched the touchscreen. “Broadcast to Federal Prosecutor’s Office, SEC, national news networks, and Whitmore Dynamics global board.”

TRANSMITTING... 100% COMPLETE.

Everett leaned back against the headrest, closing his eyes as a massive, heavy burden seemed to lift from his shoulders.

“It’s done,” Everett whispered. “Clara... you can finally rest.”
