Chapter 10 - The Whitman Home

A year later.

The historic house in Marblehead was decorated with white roses and green ivy. The lawn was filled with seventy guests—the staff of the hospital, Claire’s friends from Quincy, and the people who had stood by them during the trial.

The afternoon sun was warm, the ocean breeze carrying the sweet scent of summer.

At the altar stood Grant, wearing a flawless dark suit, his face glowing with a happiness he had never thought he would find again. Beside him stood Leo, his best man, looking proud and handsome.

And standing next to Leo, holding the velvet box containing the rings, was Noah.

He wasn't in a wheelchair.

He stood on his own two feet, wearing a small suit that matched his father's, a brilliant, gap-toothed smile on his face. He held himself tall, his blue eyes scanning the crowd until they landed on the back of the lawn.

The music changed to a soft, beautiful violin melody.

Claire emerged from the house.

She wore a simple, elegant gown of white lace, her hair swept up in a loose chignon, with no diamonds or expensive jewels—only the pearl pendant Grant had given her for her birthday.

She walked down the grass aisle, her eyes locked onto Grant’s.

When she reached the altar, Grant took her hands in his. His palms were warm, steady, and filled with a quiet devotion.

"We started this in the shadows, Claire," Grant said, his voice carrying over the sound of the waves. "We started with a silence that almost destroyed us. But you brought the light. You showed me that the most valuable thing in this world isn't what we build, but who we protect. I promise to love you, to honor you, and to listen to you and our son for the rest of our days."

Claire smiled, tears of happiness shining in her eyes. "I promise to stand by you, Grant. To never let the silence take over. To build a home where everyone is allowed to breathe, to speak, and to be heard."

The priest smiled. "By the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife."

Grant pulled Claire into his arms, kissing her with a deep, passionate warmth that signaled the true beginning of their new life.

The crowd erupted into cheers, and Noah was the first to run forward, throwing his arms around both of their waists.

"We’re a family now," Noah said, his voice clear, strong, and completely free of fear.

Claire looked down at the boy she had saved from the edge of the stairs, and then up at the husband who loved her.
