Chapter 3 - The Midnight Escape

"You should have kept your head down, Claire," Vanessa whispered, her eyes gleaming in the dark. She stepped into the study, the heavy silver poker dragging against the Persian rug with a soft, terrifying hiss. "You could have kept your little job. You could have paid for your brother’s books. But now... you’ve made yourself a liability."

Claire backed away, her hands clutching the leather folder against her chest. "He knows, Vanessa. Grant is going to find out. The records are here. He’s already looking into you."

Vanessa let out a sharp, mocking laugh. "Grant? Grant is a fool who wants to believe his beautiful wife saved his broken family. He won't believe a word from a thieving maid who broke into his private study in the middle of the night. Who do you think the police will arrest, Claire? The CEO’s wife, or the girl from Quincy who couldn't even pay her electric bill last month?"

She raised the poker, her knuckles white. "Give me the folder."

"No," Claire said.

She didn't run toward the door—Vanessa was blocking it. Instead, Claire grabbed the heavy crystal decanter from the side table and threw it directly at Vanessa’s face.

The decanter shattered against the oak doorframe, showering Vanessa in expensive whiskey and broken glass. Vanessa screamed, her hands flying to her face to shield her eyes.

Claire lunged forward, using her momentum to push past Vanessa, sprinting out of the study and into the darkened hallway.

"Guards!" Vanessa shrieked behind her, her voice echoing through the grand foyer. "Inmate! Intruder in the house! Stop her!"

Claire ran toward the west wing. She couldn't leave Noah. If she left him now, Vanessa would eliminate him before the sun rose to cover her tracks.

She reached Noah’s room, bursting through the door.

Noah was awake, sitting up in bed, his blue eyes wide with terror as the alarms in the house began to blare.

"Noah, we have to go," Claire gasped, running to his wheelchair. "Now!"

She lifted his small, fragile body into her arms. He was so light—starved of nutrition and proper care—that she managed to carry him easily, placing him into the wheelchair. She grabbed his blanket, wrapping it around him, and began pushing him down the service ramp toward the kitchen.

Behind them, the sound of heavy boots echoed from the main foyer. The estate’s private security guards were waking up.

"In the kitchen!" Vanessa's voice screamed from the intercom. "She has the boy! Do not let her leave the property!"

Claire pushed the wheelchair through the swinging kitchen doors. The service entrance was only twenty feet away.

But the heavy steel door was locked, and the electronic keypad was glowing red.

"No, no, no," Claire cried, slamming her hands against the metal.

She looked around the kitchen. The industrial dumbwaiter—the small elevator used to bring laundry and food trays up from the basement laundry room—was open.

"Noah, look at me," Claire said, kneeling in front of him, her voice frantic but steady. "I need you to get in. It’s tight, but you can do it. I’ll meet you in the basement. Okay?"

Noah looked at the dark, narrow metal box of the dumbwaiter. He was terrified of tight spaces—a leftover trauma from the car accident. He shook his head, tears streaming down his face.

"Noah, please," Claire begged, grabbing his hands. "You have to be brave. For your dad. For me. I won't let her hurt you."

Noah looked into Claire's eyes. He saw the scraped palms, the sweat on her forehead, and the absolute, unyielding love in her gaze.

He nodded.

With Claire’s help, he crawled into the metal compartment, pulling his knees to his chest. Claire slammed the metal gate shut and hit the descent button.

The machinery groaned, the cables whirring as the dumbwaiter descended into the dark.

Just as the metal box disappeared, the kitchen doors burst open.

Two security guards lunged inside, their tasers drawn. Behind them stood Vanessa, her face smeared with whiskey and ash, her eyes murderous.

"Where is he?" Vanessa hissed.

May you like

Claire stood in front of the dumbwaiter, her arms crossed, her chin held high despite the terror screaming in her mind.

"He's gone, Vanessa," Claire said. "And so is your little empire."
