Chapter 7 - The Shadow of the Board

While Adrien’s personal life was finding peace, a war was brewing inside the walls of Blake Enterprises.
The corporate board of directors—a group of older, conservative venture capitalists who controlled forty percent of the company’s voting shares—was furious. Adrien’s sudden cancellation of the multi-million-dollar fashion merger, his public drama with Veronica, and his sudden absence from executive strategy meetings had caused the company’s stock price to dip by four percent.
On Tuesday morning, Adrien walked into the main boardroom on the 60th floor.
Sitting at the head of the long conference table was Sterling Thorne, the eldest board member and a former Wall Street titan who had been trying to reduce Adrien’s voting control for years.
"Adrien," Sterling said coldly, slamming a stack of tabloid newspapers onto the table. "Care to explain what this circus is?"
Adrien sat down at the opposite end of the table, folding his hands calmly. "That is my personal life, Sterling. It does not concern the board."
"It does concern the board when the CEO of a fifty-billion-dollar tech conglomerate spends his Tuesdays arranging flowers in a rundown shop instead of managing our European expansion!" Sterling barked.
The other board members nodded in agreement, muttering anxiously among themselves.
"We have called an emergency vote," Sterling announced, a victorious smile touching his thin lips. "Under Section 4 of the corporate charter, the board can vote to remove the CEO if his personal actions create a material risk to shareholder value. We vote in two hours."
Adrien leaned back in his leather chair. A slow, terrifyingly calm smile spread across his face.
"Section 4, Sterling?" Adrien asked softly. "Did you actually read Section 4?"
Sterling narrowed his eyes. "Of course I read it."
Adrien tapped a button on his desk console. The massive projection screen on the wall lit up, displaying a complex web of financial transactions and shareholding percentages.
"If you had read Section 4 carefully," Adrien explained smoothly, "you would know that the CEO can only be removed if he holds less than fifty-one percent of the class-A voting shares."
"You hold forty-eight percent!" Sterling countered sharply. "We hold forty!"
"I held forty-eight percent until nine o'clock this morning," Adrien corrected him, his voice echoing with absolute authority. "At 9:01 AM, I personally purchased the three percent stake owned by the European Sovereign Wealth Fund for two hundred million dollars out of my personal liquid capital."
The room went dead silent.
Sterling’s face turned pale as he stared at the screen. The new breakdown was displayed in bold blue numbers: ADRIEN BLAKE: 51.2% VOTING CONTROL.
"I now hold absolute majority control of Blake Enterprises," Adrien said, standing up and buttoning his jacket. "Which means I don't need your permission, your approval, or your vote to do anything."
He walked down the length of the table, leaning over Sterling’s chair until their faces were inches apart.
"And as my first executive act with majority control, I am accepting your resignation from this board, Sterling. Effective thirty seconds ago. Julian will escort you to the elevator."
Julian stepped into the room, holding the door open with a sharp, professional gesture.
Sterling gasped, his hands trembling as he grabbed his leather briefcase and shuffled out of the room in total defeat.

Adrien looked at the remaining terrified board members.
"Now," Adrien said calmly, sitting back down. "Let us discuss the company’s new five-hundred-million-dollar corporate initiative: funding pediatric healthcare centers and small-business grants for women entrepreneurs."
