Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Backlash

By 11:00 a.m., Richard was forced to return to the black glass tower of Blackwood Capital Partners. The corporate world did not pause for family crises. As he stepped out of the executive elevator, his administrative assistant, Sarah, met him with a pale face and a tablet clutched to her chest.
"Richard, we have a situation," Sarah said, hurrying to keep pace with his long strides. "Cassandra’s public relations firm just issued a press release. It’s already been picked up by the Chicago Tribune and several financial blogs."
Richard stopped outside the double doors of the main boardroom. "What does it say?"
"She’s claiming she left the residence due to your 'erratic behavior' and 'unstable domestic environment.' She’s hinting that you are suffering from a executive burnout and that she was the only stabilizing force for Ethan. The board members are already inside, and the representatives from Vanguard Logistics—our biggest merger partner—are on the speakerphone."
Richard opened the doors. The long mahogany table was surrounded by twelve board members, their faces grim, their laptops open to the breaking news articles. At the center of the room sat Julian Vance, Richard’s chief financial officer and a man who had been angling for the CEO position for three years.
"Richard," Julian said, leaning back in his leather chair with a calculated look of concern. "We were just discussing the timing of this public scandal. Vanguard Logistics is extremely sensitive about executive stability. A messy public breakup involving allegations of domestic neglect... it’s hitting the stock price already. We dropped two points since the opening bell."
Richard walked to the head of the table but did not sit down. He rested his hands on the back of his chair, looking at the assembled board members. "Cassandra Vale was dismissed from my home last night because she was systematically starving my son while I was away securing your dividends."
A stunned silence fell over the room.
Julian cleared his throat, a faint, greasy smile appearing at the corner of his mouth. "Richard, let’s be professional. Family matters are complicated, but the market doesn't care about domestic disputes. Cassandra has deep ties to the city's elite. If she goes public with details about your absence or... behavioral issues with the boy, it jeopardizes the entire Vanguard merger. We think it might be best if you take a temporary leave of absence to settle your 'private affairs' and let me handle the closing sequence of the deal."
Richard looked at Julian, then at the other board members who were nodding in silent agreement. Seven years ago, Richard would have fought tooth and nail to protect his seat. He would have launched a counter-PR campaign, hired expensive lawyers, and buried the story.
But today, looking at these people who valued a two-point stock fluctuation over the life of an eight-year-old child, something inside him shifted permanently.

"The Vanguard merger can wait," Richard said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, quiet register that made the room grow colder. "And if the board feels my presence is a liability, you are welcome to call a vote for my removal. But let me make one thing clear: I own fifty-two percent of the voting shares in this company. If you try to push me out to save a quarterly projection, I will dissolve the partnership by Friday morning and take every single institutional client with me. Julian, adjust the files. I’m leaving at two o'clock every day to pick up my son from school. If anyone has a problem with that, my legal team is available for exit interviews."
He turned and walked out of the room, leaving the board in a state of absolute panic.
