Chapter 4 - The Diary in the Dust

The afternoon sun was weak, throwing long, gray shadows across the third floor of the Blackwood mansion. While Ethan was still at school, Richard decided to go through Cassandra’s old dressing room to ensure every trace of her influence was removed. He brought three large cardboard boxes, intending to throw her remaining luxury items into the trash where they belonged.
As he cleared out a built-in jewelry cabinet, his hand hit a hidden latch at the back of the velvet-lined drawer. A small compartment popped open, revealing a leather-bound journal and a stack of printed household schedules.
Richard sat on the white leather bench and opened the journal. It wasn't a diary of thoughts; it was a logbook.
Cassandra had meticulously documented Ethan’s daily life like a warden managing a high-security prisoner.
“October 14th,” one entry read. “Ethan took an apple from the kitchen display without permission. Caloric intake exceeded daily allowance for structural presentation. Restructured weekend meals to correct behavior. Richard called from New York; confirmed he will be delayed until Monday. Perfect.”
“November 3rd,” another entry stated. “The boy complained of stomach cramps during the charity preview. Told him if he spoke to his father about it, Richard would have to sell the house and move back to a small apartment because of his medical costs. He remained quiet for the rest of the evening. Discipline holding.”
Richard dropped the journal onto the floor, his breathing ragged. The abuse hadn't just been physical starvation; it had been psychological warfare. She had convinced an eight-year-old child that his hunger was a financial threat to his father, weaponizing Ethan’s love for him to ensure his silence.

He picked up the printed schedules. They contained detailed instructions for the housekeepers and previous nannies—all of whom had been fired within three months of hiring. The instructions were explicit: “No food is to be left in the open kitchen after 6:00 p.m. The pantry code is to be changed weekly. Ethan’s room is to be inspected daily for unauthorized items.”
Richard realized with an absolute, crushing clarity that Cassandra had systematically isolated Ethan from every single person who could have helped him, creating an environment where the boy believed his starvation was the natural price of being a billionaire's son. He gathered the journal and the schedules, placing them in his briefcase. This wasn't just evidence for a breakup; this was evidence for a criminal indictment.
