Chapter 10 - The Color of Home

The sun dipped below the blue ridge of the Hudson Valley mountains, casting a brilliant tapestry of gold, violet, and deep crimson across the evening sky.

Dinner had finished. Baby Leo was sound asleep in his crib upstairs, guarded faithfully by Sunnie, who lay curled up on the rug beside the crib.

Ethan sat on the wide, wooden porch steps of Willow Creek Estate.

In his lap lay an old, leather-bound sketchbook. On his right sat seven-year-old Lily. On his left sat Maria, a warm fleece blanket draped over her shoulders, her hand resting warmly in Ethan’s.

Lily opened her watercolor paint set—the same kind of inexpensive plastic set her grandmother had mailed her years ago. She dipped her brush into a jar of clear water, then tapped it onto a block of bright yellow paint.

"Daddy," Lily said, looking up at him with her large, dark brown eyes. "Hold still."

Ethan smiled. He didn't ask questions. He leaned his head down.

With a careful, deliberate hand, seven-year-old Lily reached up with her brush and painted a tiny, bright yellow sun directly on Ethan’s left cheek—right over the faint white scar from Victor Vance’s gun.

Maria giggled softly, watching them.

"Why a sun, Lily?" Ethan asked gently, feeling the cool, wet sensation of the paint on his skin.

Lily set her brush down and looked at him with complete, absolute seriousness.

"Because," Lily declared, her small voice clear in the quiet evening. "A man with sunshine on his face can never be sad in the dark."

Ethan closed his eyes for a moment, feeling a wave of intense, overwhelming gratitude wash over his soul.

He opened his eyes, reached out, and pulled both Lily and Maria close against his heart.

They sat together on the porch steps as the stars began to twinkle one by one in the vast, peaceful night sky above the valley.
