Chapter 3 - The Boardroom War

Two weeks passed. The initial media firestorm surrounding the canceled wedding began to fade from the front pages, replaced by fresh celebrity scandals, but inside the high-stakes world of New York finance, a new war was quietly brewing.

The betrayal of Vanessa Hart had left a blood-in-the-water scent around Ethan Cole.

Wall Street hedge funds and rival technology conglomerates saw a founder who was emotionally compromised, distracted, and vulnerable. A hostile takeover attempt was being quietly mounted by Apex Capital—a predatory private equity firm led by a ruthless mogul named Victor Vance.

Victor was Christian Vance’s uncle. And he was seeking revenge for his nephew’s arrest.

At 8:00 AM on a crisp May morning, Ethan walked into the glass-walled boardroom of Northstar Systems headquarters on Wall Street. He wore a sharp charcoal suit, his hair neatly styled, but the dark circles beneath his eyes revealed his lack of sleep.

The long mahogany table was surrounded by twelve board members. At the far end sat Victor Vance, a heavy-set man in his sixties with silver hair, cold gray eyes, and a predatory smile.

"Ethan," Victor said smoothly, leaning back in his leather chair. "You look tired. Perhaps this morning's meeting is too much for you given your... recent personal embarrassments?"

Ethan sat at the head of the table. He didn't open his leather folder. He simply folded his hands together on the polished wood.

"The personal embarrassment is over, Victor," Ethan said coldly. "Your nephew is currently sitting in a federal holding cell in Brooklyn facing grand larceny and wire fraud charges. I suggest you focus on your own legal liabilities."

Victor chuckled, a sound like dry autumn leaves scraping across concrete. "Christian was foolish. He tried to take by stealth what I intend to take by force. Apex Capital has quietly acquired fourteen percent of Northstar’s floating shares over the last forty-eight hours. Combined with the institutional investors who are nervous about your mental state, we are calling for an emergency vote to remove you as Chief Executive Officer."

A tense silence descended over the boardroom. Several board members looked down at their papers, avoiding Ethan’s eyes. Money had no loyalty; if Victor offered a thirty percent premium on their shares, half the room would vote to sell Ethan out in a heartbeat.

"You think I'm weak because a con artist tricked me?" Ethan asked quietly, leaning forward.

"I think you're an emotional farm boy who got lucky with code," Victor sneered. "You built a empire, Ethan, but you don't have the stomach to defend it. You let a housekeeper's child run your personal life. You're soft."

Before Ethan could reply, his personal phone on the table buzzed softly.

It was a text message from Maria.

Attached was a small video file.

Ethan clicked it beneath the table. On the screen, three-year-old Lily was sitting at the kitchen table in the penthouse, wearing her little red apron. She was holding a blue crayon and carefully drawing a picture on a piece of paper.

Maria’s voice could be heard off-camera: "Lily, what are you drawing for Mr. Ethan?"

Lily looked up at the camera, her brown eyes bright and shining. "I'm drawing a shield! So the mean dragon men at his work can't bite his shoes!"

Ethan looked at the tiny screen. A quiet, steady warmth spread through his chest, washing away the cold anxiety that had been clutching his heart all morning.

He turned his phone off and placed it face down on the table. He looked up at Victor Vance, his eyes suddenly turning into twin blocks of iron.

"You're wrong about me, Victor," Ethan said softly. "I'm not soft. I grew up with nothing. I know what it's like to eat cereal with water because there was no milk. I built this company with my bare hands, line of code by line of code. You think fourteen percent gives you leverage?"

Ethan reached into his jacket and pulled out a thick document, slapping it onto the table with a loud thud.

"Yesterday at 4:00 PM, Northstar Systems executed a proprietary patent lock on our next-generation quantum encryption protocol," Ethan announced, his voice ringing with absolute dominance. "I personally hold seventy percent of the intellectual property rights outside of the corporate entity. If this board votes to remove me today, my IP licenses terminate instantly."

The board members gasped.

Victor Vance’s predatory smile vanished. "You can't do that! That would destroy eighty percent of Northstar’s market valuation!"

"Then I'll destroy it," Ethan said, stepping closer to Victor, leaning over the table until he was inches from the older man's face. "I built this empire from a milk crate in a Milwaukee garage, Victor. I can build it again tomorrow. Can you survive losing two billion dollars of Apex’s capital in the next ten minutes?"

Victor stared into Ethan’s cold, unflinching eyes. He looked for fear. He looked for hesitation. He found none.

Slowly, Victor closed his leather portfolio.

"This vote is postponed," Victor spat out, his voice shaking with suppressed rage.

"No," Ethan corrected smoothly, pointing toward the heavy glass doors. "This vote is canceled. And you are getting off my board. Security will escort you to the street, Victor. Don't come back."

As Victor Vance stormed out of the room, surrounded by security guards, the remaining board members broke into hesitant, nervous applause.

Ethan didn't celebrate. He picked up his phone, looked at Lily’s drawing of the shield, and made a decision. He was done letting cold, greedy monsters dictate his life. It was time to build a real home.
