Chapter 10 - The Light That Remains

That evening, after the guests had gone home and the children were tucked safely into their beds upstairs, I walked out onto the front porch alone.

The night air was warm, filled with the soft chirping of crickets and the glow of fireflies dancing across the lawn.

I sat on the porch swing, wrapping a light shawl around my shoulders, looking out at the peaceful street. For months, I had lived in a world where every shadow held a threat, where every footstep outside a door meant pain, where my own body was a cage of hidden bruises and enforced silence.

Now, I breathed in the cool night air deeply, feeling no pain in my ribs, no tightness in my chest, no fear in my heart.

Footsteps sounded softly on the wooden floorboards behind me. Dad stepped out onto the porch, carrying two mugs of warm tea. He sat down on the swing beside me, handing me a mug, and pulled the shawl a little tighter around my shoulders.

"Thinking about the past?" Dad asked quietly.

I shook my head, looking up at the bright, clear moon shining above the trees.

"No, Dad," I said, a genuine, radiant smile touching my lips. "I was thinking about tomorrow."

Dad reached over and took my hand, his iron grip warm, solid, and safe.

"Tomorrow is going to be beautiful, Anna," he said.

And as we sat together on the porch of the home he had built for us, surrounded by the quiet safety of love, truth, and family, I knew he was right. The darkness had tried to swallow us, but the light had won. And we were finally, completely, home.
