Chapter 4 - The Story of the Forgotten

The woman on the mattress was Claire.

The story that unfolded in that small, hidden room over the next hour was more terrifying than anything I had imagined.

Three years ago, when Claire fell pregnant, Mark and Patricia had used the exact same tactics on her that they later used on me. They isolated her, convinced her she was mentally unfit, and gradually stripped away her independence. But when Claire discovered that Mark was stealing her modest inheritance from her deceased parents, she threatened to go to the police.

Patricia had intervened. Instead of letting Mark go to prison, Patricia had staged Claire’s "disappearance." They dragged Claire to this remote farmhouse, locking her in the upper rooms, telling her that if she ever tried to escape or contact the authorities, they would use their financial power to have her declared insane and take her baby away permanently.

"For three years?" I gasped, sitting on a wooden chair beside her bed, tears streaming down my face. "They kept you locked in this house for three years?"

"Not entirely locked," Claire whispered, stroking the dark curls of her three-year-old daughter, whose name was Lily. "The elderly woman you see... her name is Mrs. Gable. She was a retired nurse who lived down the road. Patricia hired her to act as my 'warden' and deliver groceries twice a week."

Mrs. Gable set the iron skillet down on a wooden table, hanging her head in shame. "Patricia told me Claire was a severely unstable drug addict who was a danger to herself and her baby," Mrs. Gable confessed, her voice shaking with remorse. "I believed her for the first two years! Patricia paid me two thousand dollars a month in cash to make sure Claire stayed inside and didn't leave the property."

"Then why did you change your mind?" Dad asked sternly, his eyes burning with outrage.

"Because three months ago, I saw Patricia come here," Mrs. Gable wept. "I overheard her talking to Mark on the phone in the driveway. She told him that he had 'found a new girl'—a colonel’s daughter named Anna—and that they were going to get married because Anna’s family had property and prestige. Then I saw Mark bring Anna’s picture here and brag to Claire that he was going to have another baby, a 'proper' baby with a woman who had a real family."

Claire clutched my hand with her thin, cold fingers. "When I heard that Mark was abusing another woman... another pregnant mother... I couldn't stay silent anymore. Mrs. Gable finally realized the truth. She realized Patricia had lied to her about me being an addict. Mrs. Gable helped me sneak out to the post office three weeks ago to mail that letter to you, Anna. It was the only thing I had left from the apartment—an old warning I had written years ago and hidden in my Bible."

I squeezed Claire’s hand back, my heart swelling with an overwhelming mixture of grief and fierce, sisterly love. This woman had spent three years living in the shadows, starved, isolated, and forgotten, yet she had risked everything to send a lifeline to a stranger.

"It’s over now, Claire," I sobbed, leaning forward to press my forehead against hers. "My father is here. The police are here. They are never going to touch you or Lily again."

Detective Reyes walked over to her radio, her face grim. "All units, update the warrant status for Patricia Carter and Mark Carter. Upgrade charges to include first-degree kidnapping, human trafficking, criminal conspiracy, and long-term unlawful imprisonment. Issue a statewide APB immediately."
