Chapter 9 - The Return to Oregon

Two years after the christening, my mother and I returned to our family estate in the lush, green valleys of Oregon for the summer.

The estate was breathtaking—rolling hills, oak trees, and a historic farmhouse that my great-grandfather had built with his own hands before the Vance family expanded into global enterprise. It was a place where wealth was measured not by crystal chandeliers or SoMa skyscrapers, but by the strength of family, the honesty of work, and the stillness of nature.

My two-year-old son, Leo, ran happily across the green lawn, chasing a golden retriever puppy while my mother sat on the wide wooden porch, laughing softly as she knit a wool blanket.

Harrison, who had become far more than just a family attorney over the past two years, walked out onto the porch holding two glasses of fresh lemonade. He handed one to me and sat down on the bench beside me.

"You look completely at home here, Maya," Harrison said, watching Leo play in the grass.

"I am home, Harrison," I replied, leaning back against the porch railing. "For three years, I tried to fit into a world of artificial status and quiet cruelty because I thought that's what a successful life looked like. I mistook modesty for weakness, and I let bad people walk over good people."

"And now?" Harrison asked gently.

"Now I know that true wealth is the freedom to protect the people you love," I said. "It’s knowing that no amount of money can buy integrity, and no amount of power can hide a cruel heart forever."
