Chapter 9 - The Thaw

In the kiln above, Claire felt the shift before she saw it.

The screaming wind that had been whistling through the broken windows suddenly lost its bite. The air in the room, which had been freezing just moments before, turned warm, soft, and thick with the scent of summer grass and rain-wet earth.

She looked at the walls.

The waxy, blue frost that had been creeping across the black brick was melting, turning into harmless streams of clear water that dripped onto the floorboards. The floor itself was no longer cold; it was hot, the heat radiating from the masonry with a strength they had never felt before.

"Mommy!" Matthew gasped, pointing to the windows. "Look!"

Claire turned.

Outside, the thick, bruised clouds of the unnatural winter were beginning to break. A single, brilliant beam of golden sunlight pierced through the gloom, striking the snow-covered fields with a warm, blinding light.

The snow was melting.

Not slowly, but with a rapid, beautiful rush, the white drifts turning into clear, sparkling streams that ran down the hills toward the river.

The door of the kiln was pushed open from the inside, and Thomas stepped out, followed by Nicholas, Silas, and Arthur. They were covered in soot, their faces blistered by the heat, but their eyes were bright with a triumphant, exhausted joy.

Claire let out a cry and threw her arms around Thomas’s neck, burying her face in his shoulder as she wept with relief.

"We did it," Thomas whispered, his hand gently stroking her hair. "The core is open. The hearth is clear."

The townspeople began to stream out of the kiln, their faces turned up to the warm sun, their hands outstretched to catch the melting snow. Children laughed, running through the rapidly thinning drifts, while the adults fell to their knees, weeping and hugging one another in the warm mud.

The winter that had threatened to turn their valley into a grave was finally, completely broken.
