Chapter 10 - The Rebuilding of Oakhaven
Six months passed.
The valley of Oakhaven had never been more beautiful. The dead fields had been cleared, the warm, rich soil yielding a harvest of wheat and corn that was twice as abundant as any in recent memory.
The old kiln was no longer a ruin.
The townspeople had worked together to rebuild the bakery, turning the black brick structure into a beautiful, two-story community hall that served as the heart of their new town. The great round oven in the center of the room remained, but it was now decorated with hand-carved stone tiles, a continuous, gentle warmth radiating from the masonry even in the coolest autumn evenings.
Below, in the subterranean vault, Thomas had built a secure stone staircase to replace the old iron ladder.
The chamber was now a sanctuary. The sphere of pure, white-gold light floated in the center of the well, its warmth channeled through a network of copper pipes that Thomas and Nicholas had designed to heat every home in the valley.
On a quiet Tuesday afternoon, Thomas stood at the edge of the well, his hand resting on the smooth, cool stone of the railing.
"It’s beautiful, isn't it?"
He turned to see Claire stepping down the stairs, holding a basket of fresh bread from the bakery above. She had a warm, content smile on her face, her cheeks pink from the warmth of the room.
"It is," Thomas smiled, pulling her close and kissing her forehead. "It’s the heart of our home."
"Matthew and Lucy are upstairs," she said, leaning her head against his shoulder as they stared at the glowing core. "They’re helping Arthur’s daughter build a toy train track near the oven. They’re laughing, Thomas. They’re not cold anymore."
Thomas looked back at the glowing sphere. The light was steady, strong, and entirely free of the blue frost that had once threatened to choke it out.

And as they walked back up the stairs toward the laughter of their children, Thomas knew that the long, cold winter of their lives was finally over, replaced by a summer that would never end.
