Chapter 10 - A Love Chosen

One year later.
The lawn of the Valente estate was decorated with white roses, silk ribbing, and soft gold lights strung through the ancient oak trees.
The summer sun shone brightly over Queens, turning the waters of the sound into a shimmering sheet of silver. There were no dark suits or tense security guards whispering in corners today—only music, laughter, and celebration.
Cassandra Sterling had spent the last year watching from afar as the tabloids covered the grandest wedding of the decade. The "plus-size nanny from Brooklyn" was now the undisputed queen of the Valente empire.
I stood before a full-length mirror in the bridal suite, admiring the reflection staring back at me.
My dress was an exquisite ivory silk creation, custom-tailored to embrace every single curve of my full figure. It didn't try to hide who I was; it celebrated it. Delicate lace embroidered with tiny pearls cascaded down the off-the-shoulder sleeves, and my brown skin glowed against the rich fabric. My hair was styled in an elegant, soft updraft adorned with white jasmine blossoms.
A soft knock sounded at the door.
Sophia, Leo, and Dante walked in. Leo was wearing a miniature tuxedo, looking incredibly handsome, while Sophia wore a matching ivory flower-girl dress. Dante looked tall and confident, holding a velvet ring box.
"You look like a queen, Meline," Sophia whispered, her eyes shining with joy.
"You look like our mom," Leo corrected softly, walking over and wrapping his small arms around my waist, careful not to wrinkle the silk.
I knelt down—just as I had done on my very first day—and hugged all three of them tightly, blinking back tears of pure happiness. "I am so proud to be your mom."
The wedding ceremony took place in the glass conservatory overlooking the sea.
When the doors opened and I walked down the aisle on the arm of the director of the newly reopened Brooklyn shelter, the entire room stood up. But I only had eyes for the man standing at the altar.
Marco looked breathtaking. His charcoal tuxedo fit him perfectly, but what took my breath away was the look in his hazel eyes—a look of profound, unconditional devotion, adoration, and pride.
When I reached his side, he took my hands, his fingers trembling slightly.
"I may not be the woman a man like you was expected to choose, Marco," I whispered, repeating the words that had started it all, a subtle smile touching my lips.
Marco smiled back, his eyes brimming with tears as he brought my hands to his lips and kissed them gently.
"You are the only woman I will ever choose, Meline," Marco said, his voice ringing clearly across the conservatory for everyone to hear. "You are my home. My heart. My love."
The vows we exchanged were simple, powerful, and real. When the priest declared us husband and wife, Marco pulled me into his arms and kissed me with a passion that set my soul ablaze, while the children cheered loudly from the front row.
Later that evening, as the sun set over the horizon, casting a warm golden light across the estate, Marco and I stood on the balcony overlooking the lawn. The children were playing tag below with their friends, their laughter floating up on the warm evening breeze.
Marco wrapped his arms around me from behind, resting his chin on my shoulder, his hands resting gently over mine.
"Happy, my love?" he asked softly.
May you like
I leaned back against his broad chest, watching our children play, feeling the warmth of his heart beating steadily against my back. The poverty, the cold waiting rooms, the cruel laughter of shallow women, and the dark shadows of the past were all gone, replaced by a love that was unshakeable, fierce, and enduring.
"More than happy, Marco," I smiled, looking out at the golden horizon. "I'm finally home."
