Chapter 3 - Shadows and Steel

Over the next two weeks, I settled into a rhythm with the children, though the tension in the estate grew thicker by the day.
Sophia gradually gave up her plastic sword, replacing her defensiveness with a fierce desire to help me bake bread in the afternoons. Dante, who had barely spoken a word since my arrival, began sitting in the kitchen while I read aloud from adventure novels, occasionally offering a single, perceptive observation about the characters.
And Marco... Marco was a shadow that haunted the margins of our lives.
He watched us from a distance. I would catch him standing at the edge of the courtyard while I played tag with the children in the crisp spring air, or leaning against the doorway of the library while I sang them to sleep. He was a man drowning in violence and responsibility, yet every time his eyes caught mine, a subtle heat flared between us—a silent, intense connection that terrified and exhilarated me in equal measure.
One evening, after the children were asleep, I walked down to the library to return a book. I didn't expect to find Marco sitting by the fireplace, an unopened glass of scotch in his hand, staring blankly into the flames.
"You should be resting, Meline," he said softly without turning around. "You work too hard."
"I could say the same to you, Mr. Valente," I replied, standing near the doorway.
He turned his head, his hazel eyes dark with exhaustion. "Call me Marco. Please. 'Mr. Valente' makes me feel like my father."
"Marco, then," I stepped further into the warm light of the fire. "You look heavy tonight."
He let out a dry, humorless laugh. "A war is coming, Meline. The other families think I’ve grown soft because I lost my wife. They think because I care for my children's safety, I won't burn the city down to protect them."
"Are you going to?"
Marco stood up, walking toward me with slow, deliberate steps. The sheer physical presence of him was overwhelming. He stopped inches away, smelling of expensive cedarwood, leather, and smoke.
"I would burn the entire world to keep them safe," he whispered, his eyes searching my face with a fierce intensity. "And I am beginning to realize... I would do the same to keep you safe."
My breath hitched. "Marco..."
"You came into this house when everyone else looked at my family like a business opportunity or a plague," he said, reaching out to gently touch a strand of hair that had fallen from my bun. His thumb grazed my cheekbone, warm and calloused. "You look at my children with love. You look at me with truth. Do you have any idea how rare that is in my world?"
"I know what it’s like to be discarded, Marco," I murmured, leaning slightly into his touch despite the alarm bells ringing in my mind. "I know what it’s like when people only see what you lack, instead of what you have to offer."
He cupped my jaw, his thumb tracing my lower lip. For a fraction of a second, the dangerous mafia don disappeared, leaving only a man desperate for warmth. He leaned down, his lips brushing against mine in a kiss that was hesitant, deep, and filled with a raw, aching longing.
Electric warmth surged through me, but before the moment could deepen, heavy footsteps echoed down the hallway outside.
Marco instantly pulled back, his mask of cold authority snapping back into place.
Julian Vance stepped into the doorway, his eyes darting between Marco and me, a tight, cold smile fixing onto his lips.

"Forgive the interruption, Marco," Julian said, his voice dripping with false deference. "The shipment at the docks has been intercepted by Moretti's men. We have a traitor in the inner circle. We need to act immediately."
Marco’s posture stiffened into iron. "I’ll be right there." He cast one final, guarded look at me. "Go upstairs, Meline. Lock your door."
