Chapter 10 - The Broken Rabbit Scissors

One year later.
The quiet evening rain fell softly against the glass windows of Lorenzo’s private study, filling the room with a soothing, rhythmic sound.
A warm fire crackled inside the stone hearth, casting long, golden shadows across the rich mahogany bookshelves, leather armchairs, and polished oak floors.
Lorenzo sat behind his massive desk, dressed in a comfortable cashmere sweater, reviewing the annual report for the DeLuca Children’s Foundation.
The heavy oak door opened softly, and Sophia walked into the room carrying a silver tray with two cups of fresh chamomile tea and a plate of warm biscotti.
Lorenzo looked up, a warm smile instantly lighting up his face. He set his glasses down and stood up, walking around the desk to take the tray from her hands and set it on the side table.
He pulled Sophia close to his chest, pressing a soft kiss against her forehead as she leaned happily against him.
“Is Emma asleep?” Lorenzo asked softly.
“Finally,” Sophia chuckled softly. “She spent two hours trying to teach Biscotti the cat how to jump through a hula hoop in the playroom.”
Lorenzo laughed—a rich, deep sound that filled the peaceful room.
He walked over to his desk, opened the top center drawer, and pulled out a sleek velvet box.
He sat back down in the leather chair, pulling Sophia onto his lap, and opened the velvet box.
Inside, resting on a bed of black silk, were two objects.
The first was his father’s silver pocket watch, fully restored, its second hand ticking rhythmically in perfect time.
Beside it lay the broken pink craft scissors—their handles shaped like tiny rabbits, one blade snapped off at the middle—cleaned of all blood, mounted in a gold setting like a precious diamond necklace.
Sophia looked at the scissors, resting her head against Lorenzo’s shoulder, her fingers gently tracing the smooth gold frame surrounding the pink plastic handle.
“Who would have thought,” Sophia whispered softly, a quiet, joyful smile gracing her lips, “that a broken pair of toy scissors would save an empire?”
Lorenzo wrapped his strong arms securely around her waist, looking into the firelight, his heart filled with a deep, unshakeable peace he had searched for his entire life.

“The scissors didn't save an empire, my love,” Lorenzo whispered gently into her dark hair. “They brought me my family. And that is worth more than all the empires in the world.”
Outside, the rain continued to fall over the peaceful estate, but inside the house, the cellar was quiet, the fire was warm, and the smallest witness in New York slept peacefully, knowing she was home forever.
