Chapter 9 - The Garden of Light

Spring arrived in New York six months later, washing away the bitter cold of winter and filling the DeLuca estate gardens with vibrant green grass, blooming white cherry blossoms, and sweet-smelling lavender.

The estate had never been more alive.

On the manicured back lawn, a massive white silk marquee was decorated with hanging crystal chandeliers, fresh roses, and gold ribbons.

Gentle orchestral music drifted through the warm afternoon air as over two hundred guests—including city officials, business leaders, and loyal family captains—filled the rows of white wooden chairs.

Inside the grand master suite, Sophia stood before a full-length mirror.

She was dressed in a breathtaking ivory lace wedding gown that swept gracefully down to the floor, her dark hair styled in elegant waves adorned with tiny white orchids. She looked radiant, powerful, and deeply happy.

Beside her, little Emma—now four years old—was jumping up and down in a matching pale pink flower-girl dress, wearing a tiny crown of daisies on her dark curls.

“Look, Mama!” Emma squealed, holding up a small wicker basket filled with pink rose petals. “I’m the flower princess!”

Sophia kneeled down, careful not to wrinkle her dress, and wiped a tiny smudge of pink frosting from her daughter’s nose. “You are the most beautiful princess in the whole world, my sweet girl.”

A soft knock sounded at the door, and Marco stepped into the room, wearing a sharp black tuxedo. He looked at Sophia, a rare, genuine smile lighting up his scarred face.

“It’s time, Sophia,” Marco said gently. “The Boss is waiting.”

Sophia stood up, taking a deep, steadying breath. She took Emma’s hand, and together they walked down the grand mahogany staircase toward the sunlit gardens.

As Sophia stepped out onto the aisle beneath the flower arches, the crowd stood up in solemn respect.

At the end of the aisle stood Lorenzo DeLuca.

He wore a tailored black tuxedo, looking magnificent, tall, and formidable. But as his dark eyes locked onto Sophia walking toward him, every trace of his ruthless mob persona melted away, replaced by a raw, profound adoration that left everyone in attendance breathless.

Beside him stood old Dr. Enzo Ricci, who had agreed to serve as Lorenzo’s honor witness.

Sophia reached the altar, taking Lorenzo’s broad, warm hands into hers.

“You look like a dream, my love,” Lorenzo whispered, his voice thick with emotion.

“I love you, Lorenzo,” Sophia whispered back, her eyes shining with tears of pure joy.

The priest opened his book, his voice carrying clearly over the peaceful garden. “Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to join this man and this woman in holy matrimony...”

As the vows were spoken and the golden rings were exchanged, Emma stood right beside Lorenzo’s knee, happily throwing pink rose petals onto the velvet carpet.

“I now pronounce you husband and wife,” the priest declared. “You may kiss the bride.”

Lorenzo pulled Sophia into his arms, dipping her slightly as he pressed his lips against hers in a deep, passionate kiss that brought the entire crowd of hardened mobsters and dignitaries to their feet in thunderous applause.
