Chapter 6 - The Gathering Storm

The snow had turned into a full blizzard by two in the morning.

At the South Side apartment building where Meredith had lived until hours ago, three dark sedans pulled up to the curb.

Dominic Maroni—a thirty-year-old man wearing an expensive leather jacket and a thick gold chain—stepped out into the snow, carrying a heavy brass-knuckled cane. Behind him stood six heavy-set men with their hands tucked inside their coats.

"Get upstairs," Dominic ordered, spitting onto the icy sidewalk. "Kick the door down. If the pregnant girl is inside, bring her to my club. Grant’s debts are her debts now."

His men moved toward the dark entrance of the building.

Before the first man could touch the iron door handle, every streetlight on the block went dark simultaneously.

The street plunged into pitch-black shadow, illuminated only by the white glare of the falling snow.

A single set of high-beam headlights flared to life from the far end of the alley.

A heavy armored Mercedes pulled forward slowly, stopping ten feet from Dominic’s car.

Vincent Ashford stepped out into the blizzard alone.

He wore no hat, no gloves, and no coat over his dark suit. He walked forward through the swirling snow with the calm, effortless weight of a storm that had arrived to clear the field.

Dominic scoffed, resting his brass cane against his hip. "Ashford? What the hell are you doing down here? This isn't your side of the river."

Vincent stopped five feet away. "This building belongs to Moretti-Ashford Holdings as of four o'clock today, Dominic."

"I don't care who owns the bricks!" Dominic sneered. "Grant Conway owes my family three hundred thousand dollars! His brother’s widow lives on the fifth floor, and she’s coming with me until I get my money!"

Vincent reached into his inner jacket pocket.

Dominic’s men reached for their holsters instantly.

Vincent pulled out a single sheet of paper—not a weapon, but an official property deed bearing the red wax seal of the State of Illinois.

"Meredith Conway does not owe you a single cent," Vincent said, his voice carrying over the whistling wind like cold iron. "Her late husband was murdered, Dominic."

Dominic froze. "What?"

"The scaffold collapse that killed Wesley Conway three months ago wasn't an accident," Vincent revealed, his eyes turning to black ice. "Your cousin, Leo Maroni, cut the support cables to frame the general contractor for insurance money. My legal team uncovered the site inspection reports three hours ago."

Dominic’s face drained of color under the dim yellow glare of his car's headlights. "That's... that's a lie."

"I have the site manager in a safe house downtown," Vincent continued smoothly. "And by five o'clock tomorrow afternoon, the state prosecutor will issue arrest warrants for five members of your inner circle."

Vincent took two steps closer to Dominic, his tall, broad frame towering over the younger man.

"Now," Vincent whispered, leaning down until his dark eyes were inches from Dominic’s face. "You have two choices. You can take your men, drive back across the river, and wait for your lawyers to call you... or you can take another step toward this door, and I will ensure that every dollar your family holds in this city disappears before sunrise."

Dominic stared at Vincent.

He saw no fear, no hesitation, and no room for negotiation in the man’s face. He knew that Vincent Ashford didn't make threats—he simply stated future facts.

Dominic swallowed hard, his throat dry despite the freezing air. He backed away slowly, waving his hand at his men.

"Get in the cars," Dominic growled, his face twisted in bitter defeat. "WE'RE LEAVING!"

As the red taillights of the Maroni vehicles disappeared into the blizzard, Vincent stood alone in the dark alleyway, his breath forming white clouds in the freezing air.

He pulled his phone from his pocket.

"Carter," Vincent said into the receiver. "It's done. Prepare the private medical floor at St. Jude’s Hospital. Meredith is going to give birth in a warm room."
