Chapter 7 - The New Dawn

Three weeks later.

The morning light broke over Lake Michigan, casting a soft pink and gold hue across the snow-capped trees of the Gold Coast.

Inside the private sunroom of the Ashford Manor, Meredith sat in a comfortable velvet armchair near the glass windows.

She wore a soft cream-colored sweater, her hair washed and neatly braided over her shoulder. Her face was no longer pale and drawn; her cheeks held a healthy pink color, and her eyes were bright with peace.

Sitting across from her was Beatrice, who was humming softly while knitting a second tiny yellow blanket.

At the corner desk, Harold sat with a cup of black coffee, reading the morning paper through a fresh pair of reading glasses that Vincent’s private physician had prescribed for him.

The heavy wooden double doors opened, and Vincent stepped inside, holding a thick leather portfolio under his arm.

"Good morning," Vincent said softly, his usual stern expression melting into a warm smile as he looked at the room.

"Good morning, Vincent," Meredith smiled, adjusting the pillow behind her back. "Did you sleep at all?"

"A few hours," Vincent said, setting the portfolio down on the table beside her. "I brought you something to sign."

Meredith looked down at the document. It bore the header: The Wesley & Janet Conway Educational & Housing Trust.

"What is this?" Meredith asked, frowning slightly.

"It’s a trust fund," Vincent explained, leaning against the edge of the desk. "It has been seeded with two million dollars from the Ashford Charitable Foundation. It guarantees that your child's education, healthcare, and housing are fully paid for until they reach twenty-five years of age."

Meredith’s hand trembled over the leather folder. Tears welled up in her eyes immediately. "Vincent... no... I can't accept this. It's too much."

"It’s not for you, Meredith," Vincent said softly, looking at her with deep respect. "It’s for the child. And it’s an interest payment on a debt that my family owed to Harold for fifty years."

Harold looked up from his newspaper, his gray eyes shining with quiet emotion.

"Vincent," Harold said, his voice thick with gratitude. "You’ve given us more than we could ever ask for. A roof over our heads, medical care, safety..."

"You gave my father his life, Harold," Vincent replied, stepping over to the old man and resting a broad hand on his shoulder. "There is no price on that."

Suddenly, Meredith gasped softly, clutching both hands over her lower belly.

Beatrice dropped her knitting needles instantly. "Meredith? Dear?"

Meredith looked up, her eyes wide with shock and wonder. "The baby... I think... I think it's time."
