Chapter 4 - The War for Pier 42

The morning brought no peace.
By 6:00 AM, Emma was settled in the luxurious master suite of Dante’s private estate in Lake Forest—a heavily guarded, fifty-acre property surrounded by ten-foot iron walls, armed guards, and attack dogs. Her mother, Mrs. Reynolds, was comfortable in a guest wing, blissfully unaware of the full extent of the danger, believing they were guests at a luxury resort provided by Emma’s "new corporate catering client."
Downstairs in the steel-lined war room beneath the estate, Dante stood before a wall of monitors displaying financial data, shipping manifests, and live security feeds.
Marco dropped a thick file onto the table. “Sal has officially gone rogue. After the failed hit on Mrs. Reynolds last night, he went directly to Don Bernardo. Sal convinced the old man that you’ve turned weak—that you’re letting a civilian girl dictate family policy.”
Dante didn't look up from his tablet. “Where is Bernardo?”
“At his compound in River Forest,” Marco replied. “Sal has stationed thirty of his personal soldiers there. They’ve effectively placed the old man under house arrest, though Bernardo is too arrogant to realize it. Sal is calling an emergency Commission meeting tonight at Pier 42 to declare himself Don.”
Dante leaned both hands on the table, his muscular back straining against his crisp white shirt. “Pier 42 is where our legal shipping operations are based. If Sal takes that port, he moves ten tons of illegal cargo into the Midwest within forty-eight hours.”
“If we attack the pier, it’s all-out war in the streets, Dante,” Marco warned gravely. “The FBI is already watching us. If blood spills on the docks, the federal prosecutor will issue RICO indictments for every Moretti alive.”
“Then we don't spill blood on the docks,” Dante said, his dark eyes narrowing into slits of pure steel. “We spill it in the courtroom of the Commission.”
A soft knock sounded at the heavy reinforced door of the war room.
The guards looked surprised, but Dante immediately held up a hand. “Open it.”
Emma stepped into the room. She wore a simple cream cashmere sweater and black trousers provided by Dante’s staff. Her hair was tied back, her bandaged hand tucked quietly into her pocket.
The hardened lieutenants in the room immediately stood taller, lowering their voices out of respect for the woman who held their leader’s heart.
“Dante,” Emma said softly, glancing at the tactical maps on the screens. “Can I speak to you?”
Dante excused his men with a quick wave. Once the heavy door clicked shut, he walked over to her, taking her uninjured hand and bringing it to his lips.
“You should be resting, Emma,” he murmured softly, the cold killer vanishing entirely.
“I can't rest while you’re preparing for war,” she replied, stepping closer, resting her head against his chest. “I heard Marco in the hallway earlier. Sal wants to use Pier 42 because it’s legally registered under your name, isn't it?”
“It’s the crown jewel of my legal empire,” Dante confirmed. “If I lose it, I lose my ability to keep this family clean.”
Emma looked up into his eyes. “Then don't fight him with guns, Dante.”
Dante raised an eyebrow. “Emma... men like Sal don't listen to reason.”
“No, but men like your uncle listen to money and tradition,” Emma said, her eyes flashing with a sharp intelligence that Dante hadn't anticipated. “You told me your uncle built this family on honor and strict codes. Sal tried to murder a civilian woman—my mother—and attempted to kidnap me from a public event. That violates every old-world rule your uncle lives by.”
Dante went quiet, analyzing her words.
“If you go to Pier 42 with guns,” Emma continued, “Sal will frame you as a traitor trying to kill your own family. But if you expose what Sal did to your uncle—in front of the other Commission bosses—Sal loses his legitimacy before he can even pull a trigger.”
Dante stared at her, a slow, marveling smile touching his lips. He reached out, his long fingers gently stroking her jawline.
“You have the soul of a queen, Emma Reynolds,” he whispered reverently.
“I just want the man I love to stay alive,” she replied simply.

Dante’s heart slammed against his ribs at the word love. He pulled her into a deep, ferocious embrace, burying his face in her neck.
“Tonight, it ends,” Dante vowed into her skin. “One way or another, I am bringing you peace.”
